DVD Workshop Size Problem

I have a 3hour Premier video which I compress to MPEG2 using it's own MPEG encoder at 3500 - this compress to under 4gig. NOW when I output this from DVD workshop(1 simple menu @ 3500)The folder works out at 14 gig. I'm new to DVD workshop and MPEG2 in general so hopefully it's somthing simple I'm missing.
Many Thanks
PJ

How long is the processing taking in DVD Workshop? If it is more than 10 minutes it is probably re-encoding the entire stream to DVD compliant (i.e. 9800 max bitrate). Obvously you don't want to do that. You may need to use a MPEG2 file properties editor to make DVD Workshop think that it is already DVD compliant. I am not sure which tool to use but a quick search should give you some free tools to do it. Doom9 is always a good place to start as well.

Compliant????

April 9 2003, 9:03 AM

Hi Gooly
DVDWS imports the file and playes it back fine but at o/p it increases the size.
It takes Premier about 10hours and I left DVDWS over night after waiting half an hour to o/p. Are u saying that DVDWS does not recognise premire's MPEG2 file and re-encodes the whole file again. What if I o/p to a AVI file instead (whats the siz of a 3hour avi file?????)
I'll check for the encoders u mentioned.
Many Thanks
PJ

If DVD workshop takes more than 5-10 minutes to prepare your DVD Folder then it is re-encodeing the file to it"s own DVD Specs, in the DVD Writeing Dialog make sure the Box that says "Do not Convert Compliant Files" has a Check Mark in it, and When you choose your DVD Template choose "Custom" and then set the Perameters to that of the Mpeg file you are trying to burn to DVD, Meaning make the template have the Bitrate of your Mpeg file for both Video and Audio then it shouldn"t convert the file because your File"s Properties will match the Templates Properties..And if you can"t get that to work(I can"t see why not) you can use a Program called "DVD Patcher" to patch the header of your File to match the Properties in the DVD Template you are useing in "DVD workshop"....

I knew that there was a program out there that did that. DVD patcher, how fitting.

All answers above are good and correct but most important - is to make sure youre template for creating mpeg2 in premiere are set for correct dvd-specs. This way DVDWS will work fine without any fiddling. Make sure resolution are 720x576(480) and audio is 48KHZ. Also make sure in DVDWS under project preferences that you have it set for correct TV-system, PAL or NTSC.

Wait a minute....!

The obvious burning question that is not mentioned here is WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON!?!?! Why is DVDWS re-encoding a 3 hr/4GB hovie to match a 30sec intro/200K menu??? This really is the tail waggin the dinosaur!

Also I never thought the menu needed to be = to the source files. I burn with a few different data rates and resolutions in DVDMF2 (on occasion DVDWS and Spruce). Never noticed a re-encode.

Well folks I've tried everything - same bit rates - DVD patcher and still the same outcome. I've encoded with premier till I'm blue in the face and I'm now using TMPGEncoder so I'll let you know how that goes. By the way I tried to bring the 4gig mpeg2 file into reeldvd and it would not accept it saying it only takes 4:3 ratio. It is or should be PAL 720x576. Any ideas.
Many Many Thanks

Sorry Folks
Was going in the wrong direction.
In DVDWS if the 4gig clip is set to just play first and I go to final it works out at 4gig - great - BUT if I bring it in again to the title list to add chapters ect it works out a 8gig. Does DVDFWS(not going to tell u what the extra letter means)not know its the same clip im working on.
Many Thanks
PJ
