How many milliseconds is my audio out of synch?

If my source mpeg has audio and video out of synch, is there a good way to "measure" how much out it is?

For example, I've got a music video that the audio is leading the video (lips) by something less than a half second, but I can't tell exactly how much. I've experimented with "adjusting" the audio by the amount reported when creating a project (.d2v & .mpa files) with DVD2AVI, but it came out worse. So I reversed the sign and it was still off, but not as bad.

I don't see any clear references (like the slam of a door) when looking at the audio wave and comparing it to the video, so what can I do?

Thanks,

Tim

Trial and error. Adjust in steps of 0.2 seconds until it is OK. The best thing is to watch the lips. It's hard to notice less than 0.2 seconds difference but you can try to fine tune with 0.1 s steps. Sometimes the video is in synch in the beginning but not in the middle or the end so you may need to cut or add silence (or cut video frames) in parts of the video to resync it. Sometimes you also need to stretch the audio.

trial and error

trial and error is the answer, but first do your best to identify whether the audio is ahead of the video or the opposite. Then make and adjustment, note the result, and try again.

I recommend keeping a record on scratch paper as you demux/mux to help nail it down quickly.

There is a chance that the synch is out in some non-linear fashion that will always leave it out of synch at some portion of the video, but there will be a sweet spot for best playback.

good luck.
