Since i'm only doing small video segments(5 to 10 min), is there anyway i can store those(and latter play on my dvd)on cdrom? Svcd is fine, but if i can go all the way to dvd quality i would be more pleased.
The answer depends on the capabilities of your standalone DVD player.
There are two issues:
1) Does the player recognise DVD material when its on a CD (which is termed a miniDVD)? Most players detect the physical media first and conclude that since its a CD-disk, it wont have DVD files and so they conclude the disk is unreadible.
Some players like Sampo and Apex do play miniDVD - although you may need a specific firmware version even then. Dvdhelp.com has a list of what players play what formats.
Some players wont play a miniDVD, but WILL nevertheless play DVD-spec MPEG2 files (i.e before they get authored to vobs).
2) If they will play the files, the second issue is then the bitrate that they play smoothly without jerkiness. That primarily depends on the capability of the physical DVD drive unit.
VCD bitrate is 1300kbs, SVCD is 2600, and DVD can go as high as 9000. In my experience, most newer players can handle up to about 3000-4000.
I have an Afreey LD2060, and regularly save (and play) raw 4500kbs DVD-spec MPEG2 files CD on that. Ultra-cheap storage, and the files can quickly be authored to vobs on DVD-R when needed.
Thanks, i've been experimenting all afternoon, now i can write and read with my JVC N-44 XVCD,SXVCD, and i'm in the process of learning miniDV.My player play the file, but in a slow motion like manner. Have to find a way.
Thanks.
While i can't play mini(dv) with great success for now on my dvd player, i can still store mp2 file with dvd quality made with tmpenc as a data file on cd,so i have a high quality back-up, before i get a real dvd burner(or finf someone with one).
