What codec is the avi and what kind of audio comperession is being used? Will the avi playback with sound on your PC right now?

If it is downloaded it could be either mp3 or OggVorbis. You should be able to get any compressor needed to play it back for free.

Virtual Dub may or may not help. If it is some oddball audio scheme, it may help to save it as a wave file and then encode it. VDub is a necessary tool for any video geek, it does way too much not to have installed. It looks a little complex to some because it does not have the big pretty buttons or even a real linear approach, but once you get the hang of it you won't want it anyother way.

Go to www.Doom9.org for guides on virtual dub. The best freeware program on the planet.

Your AVI if it is a Divx or Xvid file Probably has AC3 or VBR Mp3 audio and Tmpgenc does not support those Formats, You Probably need to extract the audio to Wav format then use the Wav audio as the source in Tmpgenc, You Can use Virtual Dub for this, Virtual Dub_Mod might be better cuz it habdles VBR MP3 and AC3 better than the Regular Virtual Dub...
