Could somebody please give me a list of the most important codecs i would need to install or have in order to make VCDs and Svcd and to encode avi files

Well, you will obviously need MPEG-1/2 codecs to play any VCDs/SVCDs you make As far as AVIs go, you'll need DivX, Huffy and maybe MJPEG. There are other AVI codecs, but my limited experience with AVI files is that the other codecs are rarely used and you're not likely to encounter them.

What codec you need depends Totally on what types of files you are encodeing, if you never come in Contact with say a Mjpeg file there is no need to have the Codec, But generally you just need a Couple Mpeg4/Divx codecs, and a Mpeg2 codec so you can watch Mpeg2 files, and if you come across a file that won"t play find out what codec it was encoded with and install it.You never want to many un-needed codecs on your system..
