Current System:-
Camcorder:- Cannon MV500I (DVin and Out) with firewire supplied with camera
PC
Athlon XP1700
1Gig PC133 Ram
Seagate 60Gb hard drive
Nvida Geforce2 MX 400 64 Mb
Software:- Windows XP, Studio 7
Read many articles hoping that I could clarify a few things never realising how complex this whole business is!!
1.0 Using Studio 7 copy the data from the camcorder
to PC - Stored as an AVI file.
Does studio 7 affect the quality of the data that is transferred in?
can I add better Codecs for Studio 7 to use?
2.0 Edit the AVI to create the video - Studio 7 is fine at the moment for this.
3.0 Two option now:-
Re-record the completed video back onto the Cannon using the option to create an AVI file with output to the camcorder in Studio 7.
Is Studio 7 the best software to do this or should I use something else. Can I use a different Codec to do this in Studio 7? (default DV Video Encoder used)
OR
Create a SVCD for playing on DVDs which is the preferred option.
Plan to use TMPGenc to convert to MPG2 and then burn onto to CD.
Not sure what CD burner software to use yet a little confused about the best one - VCDEasy seems popular.
If this has all been answered before I would appreciate if someone could give me the URLs.
I have read so many articles I am a little brain dead with it all!!
If I understand you well, you use Studio 7 for capturing from a dv camera and editing the video.
Studio is a simple program but if it can do the job you want, it's oké.
TMPGENc is (with MainConcept) a good choise for transforming the AVI to MPEG2 (SVCD template).
I really can advice you to use Nero for burning to SVCD. It can make a menu, but if you want it fancy, try Ulead DVD Workshop.

When transfering the Data from your Camcorder there should be No Quality Loss at all, You just need to Render your Project as an AVI file then Use a Good Encoder to encode to Mpeg2/SVCD..
Just to comment on VCDeasy which you mentioned. It has its place, but one of the drawbacks of using it is that it is really fussy about the video you input and it will sometimes report too short a length for your video clips. For example, if you have a 35 minute clip and it says its 20 minutes long, don't bother burning it because 20 minutes is all you will get. I also think that VCDeasy is a fairly advanced tool and maybe not so good for rank beginners to use. I have a very poor opinion of CDRDAO, the burning software that comes with it. If you read the docs, it seems to indicate that CDRDAO will work with almost every burner on the planet. My experience has been that there are plenty of burners it won't work with at all, so don't count on being able to use it. At least it's free though.
I have a Sony DCR TRV16 mini DV and i do the following.
I bought a cheap firewire card called SOHO which included the cable and the Videowave 5 software. That software does not make SVCD but VCD so i use Roxio EASY cd and DVD creator 6. I download the video using the videowave 5, import it to Roxio and burn SVCD straight up with success on my first try. Really easy.......with good quality. 35 mins on 650mb cd.
