Something is wrong when burning SVCD with NERO....help required.

Hello guys,

I'm trying to create SVCD from AVI and then burn on CD-R using NERO, but for some reason it doesn't work. Of course the goal is to playback the movie on home DVD players.

OK, here is what I did:
- I downloaded a movie with filesize 920MB and extension .AVI;
- I used VirtualDub 1.5.3 to split the file in two portions approximately 460MB each;
- Now I used TMPGEnc 2.512.52... to convert the AVIs into SVCDs.
- This has produced two files, each approx. 740MB with extension .MPG;
- Here I used Nero 5.5.10.28 to burn the .MPG files to CD-R according to the AfterDawn guide;
- The burn process seems to end successfully at 4x speed;

And here comes the problem:
When I insert the CD-R I just created with Nero into my DVD player on the pc, nothing happens at all. I tried to use both Windows XP Media Player and the DVD playback software that came with my ATI graphics card to playback, but the drive spins for eternal....

There are 4 directories on the CD-R. These are: EXT, MPEG2, SEGMENT and SVCD
In the MPEG2 folder there is a file called AVSEQ01.MPG. I've tried to playback that file as well with above mentioned software, but here again unsuccessfully. In fact, I don't have a home DVD player where to test the CDs, but shouldn't they playback on a PC as well? Just want to avoid giving out some CDs that don't work.

Anybody knows what the solution to my problem could be?
Thanks a lot and Best Regards.....

Sounds like somthing is whacky with your mpeg2 codec.
Maybe try downloading WinDVD or PowerDVD and manualy point it to that AVSEQ01.MPG file in the MPEG2 folder.
See if this helps?

As Gammer Said there should be any problem playing the AVISEQ01.MPG File if you have a suitable Mpeg2 decoder installed on your PC, Something like "Power DVD" is ideal for Playing Back Mpeg2/SVCD Files..You said that your Goal is to play back the SVCD on your DVD player, but then you said that you do not have a DVD player to test it on..I guess you just haven"t bought one yet??? when you do be very carefull with which one you buy cuz Not all DVD Players play SVCD"s and even ones that do do not play all of them and not all very well, Make sure you really check out the Player you get, and the Most compatible ones seem to be the Less Known Brands and the less expensive ones, something to consider...

You guys were right....!!!!
I downloaded WinDVD and all the problems were gone. So probably, as you said, the MPEG2 codec was either screwed or never installed.

Isn't there any MPEG2 encoder installed by default in WinXP? I mean, Windows Media player is good enough to playback DVDs (the one's I rent...) so why wasn't it good enough to playback the CD-R with the AVISEQ01.MPG file? After all it's still an mpg, isnt't it???

Luisifer:
I don't have a home DVD player, just one for the PC. The reason I'm going through all this is because I wanted to share the movie with friends who have no PC DVD but only a home DVD.....

In any case, I would like to thank all of you out there....wherever you are!! Isn't the Internet a wonderful experience???

As far as I know, Win XP does not install a MPEG2 codec. MPEG2 codecs have some value to them, so they are usualy only available for a price, like when you buy WinDVD. I think that the codec that Windows Media player was using was the one installed with your ATI dvd player. I have not had much luck playing SVCD's with the ATI player either, so I'm not surprised it didn't play your SVCD.
On a side note, I'm pretty sure WinDVD will use your ATI card for hardware DVD playback. Which is better then software playback.

I believe the latest Windows Media Player (version 9) now has mpeg-2 support.

Also, make sure if you use PowerDVD, to have the latest update/patch they offer.

At first I installed PowerDVD, and it played a bit jerky. After patching to the latest update, it worked a lot better.
