Q.-level MMC8.6 vs. WinDVR3

Huh!

AIW7500 capture from cable-tv 720x576 (PAL)
BitRate viewer Q.-level only 2.7 with MMC8.6 at 8Mbit/s but 5.98 with WinDVR at 11Mbit/s.

And SVCD (PAL) Q.-level 3.2 vs. 7.2
Is it videosoap that cleans picture to that GOOD Q.-level ?!!
The less the better You know.

The Q-value may differ depending of linear or non-linear quantization is used. Does bitrateviewer report the same parameters for both?

Is it worth the trouble upgrading to MMC8.6? I'm still using 8.0 on my old ATI AIW Radeon. I can't upgrade the DVD player to anything higher than 7.6 without buying a new ATI MMC upgrade CD.

Alternatively I'm thinking of maybe buying a All-In-Wonder Radeon9800SE. Radeon 9800SE is a stripped Radeon 9800 with only 4 pipelines but it's maybe a little bit better than a 9600pro.

Linear table =
0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, ...

Non-linear table =
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16

So a quant of 2.7 linear = actual Q-level of 5
5.98 non-linear = actual Q-level of 6
3.2 linear = actual Q-level of 6.4
7.2 non-linear = actual Q-level of 7.2

In summary, ATI MMC is better than WinDVD, but no by as much as it might look from the Qp levels.

MMC AV sync problems are back

When I first installed the AIW Radeon about 3 years ago, there was an infamous a/v sync problem that was discussed at length on this forum. At some point ATI came out with a version of MMC that fixed the problem, at least for me.

Last night I installed MMC 8.6 with my AIW Radeon and recorded "The Blues" from TV using the DVD profile. Playback resulted in the worst a/v sync I've ever experienced.

This morning I experimented with variations on the DVD profile, such as reducing the bitrate to 3-5 MB/sec or the audio sampling to 44 KHZ. Everything I tried at the 740 X 480 resolution resulted in this bad sync problem. However the SVCD profile seems to work fine.

Now that DVDR's have fallen to less than a buck a disk and SVCD capable DVD players are getting hard to find, I'm thinking of buying a DVD burner and changing my recording habits accordingly. (They'll probably kick me out of this forum for treason.)

Does anybody have a fix for this sync problem?

Hi,

Did You install latest displaydriver, WDM-capturedriver, DX9.x etc. ?? as ATI instructs ??.
Usually previous versions should be deleted first.

MMC sync problem

Yes, I installed the latest display driver and all the other stuff ATI reccommends, except the DVD player (I play back the recorded video with ATI file player or the windows media player).

I wonder if my system just lacks the power to capture to DVD format. It's only an 850 MHz Athalon on an Asus KT133 MB.
