Glitchy SVCD playback only on certain players

Maybe someone has had this interesting problem...
I'm getting glitchy playback; not out of sync play or inverted 1st and 2nd frame playback, but rather digitized flecks or lines running across the screen accompanied by a squeak in the audio, but only on certain dvd players. The glitch will last only a few seconds on my home dvd player, always in the same scene, but is not present when played on the PC's dvd drive, or when the original .cue is mounted in a virtual drive.
So obviously it's the dvd player, but it is a model that specifically states that it will run svcd format, and for the most part runs it flawlessly. I will buy a beer for the first guy with a good theory! (disclaimer: I will not actually buy you a beer)
Tech info: I use DVD2SVCD to convert, playback with powerDVD, write with Alcohol 120%, and the home dvd player is a SONY DVD-F85.
