Ive looked extensively for an answer and have been unable to find one. I am making a slideshow on Nero, using VCD format, for hundreds of photos. And it has worked on my dvd player....However, it becomes a big hassle to scroll through hundreds of photos one by one to find the ones I want.

I tried menus but Nero only allows 17 menus, with 99 photos total, and I need to store 700. This is inadequate.

I have Nero 5.5.9.17. The ideal solution to this problem is if I could somehow make accessible folders on some sort of menu screen, allowing me to select the folder (and corresponding images) that Im looking for.

Does anyone know of any GOOD programs that allow me to convert photos into quality mpegs? This way I can just put the movies on the VCD and have a table of contents with pseudo subfolders.

p.s I would appreciate any help on how to do this with Nero, if possible, before being told I should buy some other very expensive software.

Does your DVD player support JPEG display? i.e: it shows the directories you create on a cd, lets you enter them and browse the JPEG images one by one using the remote keys as navigation keys. I know this is not fancy (no effects, no background music), but it does give you a lot of flexibility. I know many DVD players come with this feature.

As for programs, there are many many out there. I like Photodex ProShow Gold, but it is also limited to about 96 menu items.

Comes to think of it, why don't you create a DVD instead of a VCD. This way you get much better quality, and you can create an unlimited number of nested menus. This will surely satisfy your needs.
