MPEG1 to VCD/SVCD

Hi All,

New here so will try and give you as much info as poss.

I have a small selection of 45(apx) minute MPEG1 videos. I want to make either a VCD or SVCD for each. I have managed to make a VCD with one of them using Nero but none of the 3 DVD players in the house like it so I assume they will only play SVCD. Tried to create a SVCD (by using the Nero plugin to convert to MPEG2 first) but the file which was originally 430MB becomes 881MB and will not fit on a CD.

Suggestions please and if any other software is required please suggest free stuff as this is only a once off job and I dont wish to lay out alot/any money to do it.

Cheers,

Jamie

you're either doing something wrong or not telling the story correctly. a 45 minute video will indeed fit on a 700mb cd as an svcd regardless of file size. period. i have hundreds to prove it. up to about 50 minutes will actually fit as a svcd but some would argue that quality degrades above 35 or 40. did you try it or did you just ass-u-me that it wouldn't fit because of mb's? of course svcd is a bigger file as its better quality. if size really is ever the problem, split it onto two or more disks.

some dvd players don't like any home made cd's. some don't like particular brands. it has to do with reflectivity of the disk.

with nero, different versions do things differently. you do not burn as audio disk or data disk. some versions say vcd or svcd. some say other formats, then video cd, something like that. tell me which version you're using and exactly what you are clicking to burn it.

the other thing is the svcd itself. you are using what program to convert from whatever format to vcd/svcd?

Nero is trash as a converter. i think thats the real problem. i picked up on it after reading again. try to get tmpgenc or main concepts converter.

do some research here. there are step by steps available.

Hi Bill,

Sorry I haven't gotten back sooner.

Yes I did try to actually burn it but Nero wouldn't do it as it created a file that was too big. Its Nero 5.something. After much testing etc I just used Nero to burn the MPG to a SVCD whilst still in MPEG-1 format and turned off standard compliance and it worked like a treat.

I have since been converting someavi files into MPEG's and creating SVCD's. I used "1st Video Converter" to do this.

Thanks for your suggestions anyways/

Jamie
