Im wondering how to make a vcd or svcd with chapters burned onto a dvd instead of using multiple cd's. Nero wont help me and the program that i got with my burner is useless

To burn anything to DVD there is a middle step of preparing your videos to burn to dvd. To do this you have to use an authoring program. There are many you can try, go to www.videohelp.com to find some and there reviews. You also must make some changes to be able to burn VCD, and SVCD to DVD.

VCD: you have to convert the audio from 44100 HZ to 48000 HZ and perhaps convert the audio to 384bps. (Not sure I have not spent much time trying to do this, but I have seen references that say you do and don't).

SVCD The sounds needs converted as well from 44100HZ to 4800HZ, and if your really going to make it compliant you have to re-encode the video from 480x480 to a DVD format: 352x480, 704x480, or 720x480. HOWEVER there is a way to burn on converted video to DVD but it involves tricking the Authoring software buy changing the header on the video to say it is compliant. Since most DVD players will play SVCD anyway this usually works, however it all depends on your DVD player.

i use roxio easy cd and dvd creator to do it. it is all automatic as it is with most programs you'll find. don't be scared off by guys that say you have to convert this and that. lets say i have a svcd on 4 disks. i simply drag the four avseq whatever they are called files into the program and hit burn. it will convert to vob files, etc and then burn onto the dvd disk all with the push of one button. the result will be a real homemade dvd with as many chapters as svcd's that i fed in. i have a very extensive collection of vcd's, svcd's and dvd's that i have made, all with very few mistakes. every program i use to do things, do the things automatically. no manual crap. the manual stuff is for know it all rookies.

Just so you understand that roxio does redo the video to make it compliant. Usually the automatic converter will loose some quality in the conversion process as well. However if you are only viewing on the TV, it is possable that there would be no visiable difference there.

If this is acceptable then there is no easier way .

No we're not a big production company making perfect copies and 99.9% of people are not. most people view then on tv, not in elaborate theaters or something. i mean if you want an absolutely perfect copy of a dvd you buy the dvd.

True, but a lot of people who use their computers to convert video also use their computers to view their videos. Computer screens do give you higher resolution than any “elaborate theaters or something”, including HDTV. If your talking about pirating video then you would be right as well, however some of us save our home movies and such on video and transfer them to VCD, SVCD and now DVD. Because videotape start to break done after about 7 years give or take.

Need less to say the quality of the video work is not perfect and because of that I will never get an “absolutely perfect copy”, However that does not mean that when I want to view my kids first Christmas on my computer in 5 years I want it to be a lesser copy then the original which was on SVCD.

And if you will notice the original question was about transferring VCD and SVCD to DVD, not about making perfect copies of DVD’s, But whatever.

With the authoring softeware DVD-lab it is very easy to put SVCD on DVD without reencoding the video, but it is not according to DVD-standard and you may have problem with playback on some players.

If you want to put VCD on DVD I think the easiest authoring software is TMPGEnc DVD Author which automatically converts the audio to 48 kHz.
