SVCD/miniDVD/VCD Creating method for type1.avi (no gamma shift)

This is to Ross Mcl , don't have to give up UMSP6 ^_^
The key point is using tmpgencb12c to wrap type1.avi (save as a .tpr) and use vfapi reader to convert to ref-avi then using avisynth (using avisource script)
you can feed the .avs to tmpgenc or cce for your encoding job.
Compared with the UK's expert't guide, this method does not require re-capturing process.
Here is the way
1. Use tmpgencb12c(load your svcd template) to load your type1.avi and save project( as a xxx.tpr)
Continiue this process with your other type1.avi
2. Use vfapi reader to convert those xxx.tpr files to xxx.avi(a reference avi structure ,it is vfw compliant)
3. write an avisynthscript like
AVISource("d:\render\File1.avi") + AVISource("d:\render\File2.avi")+...
or
ConvertToRGB(AVISource("d:\render\File1.avi") + AVISource("d:\render\File2.avi")+...)
4. Feed the avisynth script to tmpgenc(or CCE) and Encode
Hi Henry thanks for the excellent detail, I have added this to my site with appropriate source of course.
I have already uninstalled MSP6 but others will try it.
COMMENTS:
Gareth: since you are still in MSP6, this would seem to be an excellent process to try if it gets around the re capture from the DV master, in my view it is a BUT......
In my experience with MSP6 it will still, in a WE98SE system, require joint joinable files that allow music across the joint to be un noticed in sound level or without missing notes and I struggled with that as MSP6 is not frame accurate at the joining face when "creating" either providing more than one frame at the end (repeated last frame) or actually missing frames at the start of a "create" which I was only able to overcome by placing black front and back so that the problem occurred in the balck and could fixed by editing in P6 or 5.1 None of that with P6 as a base, plus P6 is a far better edit program to work with.
The quality of the image from MC Type 2 VfW or MC Type 2 and 12c would need checking against this method of authoring with a Type 1 file as a base.
Thanks, I am sure MSP6 users will take it up if they are seriously staying with Ulead.
thanks Henry, I like the sound of your method! Look forward to trying it out as soon as I finish todays encoding run.
I have to agree with Ross, MSP6.0's timeline playback option is flaky at best. Even with the latest patches the only way I can get flawless playback from the timeline is to make sure the timeline is zoomed so the whole project fits on one screen and to avoid using any fades between clips. Butt joins are fine, wipes or fades give me problems. The glitch only lasts a fraction of a second but it annoys me at least.
Whilst I can see the advantage of doing the encoding direct from type 1's without the recapturing I'm doing, am I the only one that likes to keep a master copy of my project on tape? A 43 minute project around 8Gig in size. I'd much rather have this on tape for the future, instead of only having a SVCD MPEG2 file of 770mb.
If you're having problems with VFapi files being unreadable to softwares, UNINSTALL virtualdub's AVI Proxy, Convert the VFapi file, and then reactivate the proxy.
Well I finally found time to give this method a try and not having much luck. from Henry's original message

I cannot get TMPEnc. to accept a type 1 AV! tried beta 12a, beta 12c, beta 12d, always the same the encoder just freezes, does not matter how long I leave it I eventually have to ctrl+alt+del to kill it. I know my old amd 266 win95 machine will read type 1's in tmpenc. but this is so very, very slow as to make it unusable. Is there anything I could try to get type 1's working with TMPEnc on my athlon 700?
"2. Use vfapi reader to convert those xxx.tpr files to xxx.avi(a reference avi structure ,it is vfw compliant)"
I've uninstalled the frameserver client for VirtualDub, installed the vfapi codec, but when I try to convert my xxx.tpr file using the vfapi reader all I get is a frozen reader (hard drive runs then stops, but the reader does not respond)
still the same. I have installed the vfapi codec and tmpgenc vfp plugin, as well as the readavs.dll for tmpgenc. The xxx.tpr file can be heard loading but when the hard drive stops the vfapi reader remains frozen.
So you dug up this old great thread from the old days just for some spamming... I thought Ross MCl and Gareth Horne was back... But then I noticed the date of the thread. These guys was really digital video experts long before most of us even heard of DVD burners.
This forum was great once but it was then destroyed by spamming and popups...
