I think it's a bit of a con, the only tiny thing that makes me think there might be more to it with the possibility of it being genuine is the fact that all his details are down there, his phone number and his full address.
If he is a con artist he would be pretty easy to track down.
Also he doesn't mention any of the other missing footage only the 'saw in the head' scene which seems a bit odd.
