From all the stuff I've heard about this, this is my understanding. The chinese community were pissed off at Bruce for teaching gung fu to non-chinese. Wong Jak Man, who was represented the chinese community, issued a challenge to Bruce, who of course, accepted. If Bruce lost, he was to shut down his school. If he won, he could teach to whoever he wanted. The fight last about 3 minutes, which mainly consisted of Bruce chasing Wong Jak Man around the kwoon punching him in the back of the head. Bruce finally got him down and would only let him go until he officially "gave up." This was a turning point in Bruce's life as he found he was unusually winded after only a 3 minute fight. He took his training and conditioning much more seriously and started to re-evaluate wing chun. Some even say this was the birth of Jeet Kune Do.
Well, that's my take on the topic. Anyone else? |

well, that's the version that all us bruce lee fans know, 'cause that's what linda lee reported and wrote about in all the bruce books. wong jack man and his disciples have a decidedly different account.
here is a good synopsis of the two accounts:

so the source is an article in a karate magazine published in 1980.
there's no point in debating who might be right, but this is the view from the other camp. no one will ever know the truth, and even if you were there, you might have a different version anyway.
all people have their own biases and see reality in different ways. when they have big biases (their reputation depends on it, they're married to somone, etc....), they see things in really different ways.
nixon-kennedy, bush-gore, hagler-hearns, bruce-wong jack man...
