Affidavit of Support

I am wondering if I need a co-sponsor. Do they base the decision about the affidavit of support based on your income now, or over the past 3 years?

Here is my situation. My income now and for the past 4 months is well above the poverty line. However, my income for the past 3 years is below the poverty line due to a slow healing back injury for which I have not received any workers compensation yet because the insurance company is contesting the claim.

Any opinions or advice would be very welcome.
