Yes I know Ish. He worked with us in the early days and built an early cockpit for the planes. He is a good guy, and maybe when we get our process and tool set nailed down he'll come back and help out some more.
As for shadows, we are currently using static shadows in the textures, but one of the things on my list of features to add to the game engine is bump mapping. I was thinking that this would look particularly cool on the wings of a plane that was performing evasive maneuvers as you attempt fill it full of lead. I dont know if it will turn out looking great, or if will just end up slowing down the frame rate a bunch, so we'll have to see if it makes it the final game, but it looks promising at this point.
