Houses of the Jas. Potter Gang - A Popular HP Topic

by Jemima Steptoe

Okay, I guess some of this might be considered "spoilers" if you haven't read Book 3. (What is our spoiler etiquette here, anyway? I know not all of us have read Book 4 yet, but have we all read the first 3?)

Anyway, this is a popular topic I've seen discussed elsewhere, and I'm curious, too: Have we ever heard for certain which houses James Potter & Friends were in? After Book 3, I assumed that Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot & Prongs were all Gryffindors, but... People have pointed out that, back in Book 1, Hagrid says all the Wizards who went bad were in Slytherin, and he would have believed that Sirius Black was bad, so what are the odds that Sirius was a Slytherin? Slytherins aren't inherently *evil*, just ambitious with an attitude of "the end justifies the means," which might actually come in handy when becoming an Unregistered Animagus, escaping from Azkaban, and hunting down Peter Pettigrew. If Sirius was a Slytherin, it might be just one more reason people were so quick to believe he had gone to the dark side and was working for Voldy. PLUS, think of how this plays in the Severus vs. James feud -- Sirius Black, a Fellow Slytherin, would rather be friends with that hot-shot Potter and his Gryffindor chums than stick with his own house and hang out with Snape. I also expect to eventually find out that Lily was in Ravenclaw.
