Yes, you're probably right. Cross-hatching is easy as hell to mess up, but it's not quite as mind-numbing as stippling.
However, they both involve sitting in one position, staring at a piece of paper for hours on end as you laboriously cover it with spots of ink, one millimetre at a time. So I doubt there's much difference.
