Poll - if they were Muggles...

by Grindylowe

Hey all-

First of all I think we should recruit some more peeps to this board...Kat's boards are always wonderful.

I have a poll - what would the characters be if they were Muggles? Here's my ideas-

Snape - A depressed chemist who really wants to work in forensics but can't seem to get the job, thrice divorced, never got over his Nine Inch Nails days.

Harry - A mistreated chess prodigy.

Sirius Black- Looking for the one-armed man

Lupin - a high school biology teacher in Iowa who causes controvery when it's discovered he's a transexual.

Professor Treylawny - A phone psychic with annoying late night commericals and her own 900 number.

Professor Macaganall- "You are the weakest link, goodbye"

Dumbledore - Living at the North Pole with a jolly band of elves.

Hermione- Biiter from understimulation at public high school, Hermione wears army boots, makes snide remarks, and hangs out with her only friend

Ron - the class clown. Dur.

Lord Voldemort - selling out concert venues with his own brand of vicious shock rock. (Just imagine a bunch of kids screaming "Voldemort, Voldemort!")

Hagrid - Roadie for barnum and baily circus

Anyone else?

I ought to throttle you for that description of Lupin...

by Riven Dacryph

...but I'm really a very understanding sort once you get right down to things. Personally, I think Lupin would be an English teacher much like Robin Williams' characters in "Good Will Hunting" and "The Dead Poets Society". Snape would be that science teacher everyone dreads getting... And McGonogal would be my Philosophy teacher, Miss Maksym. They're really strikingly similar.

In Iowa?

by Cassandra

I'm going to get you for that one, Grindylowe. Oh, not for the bit about transsexuality; I mean for situating Lupin in Iowa. ^_^;; (Argh! We're fixated on the Americas!) Personally, I can see him better back in England where he belongs, just finishing a Doctorate in Anthropology (or maybe Folklore? Kind of the way Séan McCann was working before he dropped out to join The Band - mua ha ha) at Oxford. And maybe teaching a bunch of howling brats to Talk English Right at some local comprehensive. Or maybe he'd be in France. I'll leave that one up to Jemima - she's the French Lupin advocate here.

You know, Lupin always struck me as quite masculine, in his own sober fashion. In fact, d'you know, he reminds me very much of Stephen Maturin from the Patrick O'Brian books, albeit not quite so eccentric (i.e. he doesn't sail around in a man-of-war, picking up sloths, wombats, emus and accusing the sailors of drinking the spirits meant for preserving specimens in along the way). He'd get along well with women, that I can see (one of Stephen's main traits), but he's still very much a member of the opposite sex. He'd have to do some deep digging merely to unearth his feminine side.

Ah, but meh, that's only my impression. I might be blind, or insane. I don't particularly care, really. I'm too busy trying to write up a snaggit at the moment. I'm just taking five minutes to write this post and then I'm running off again. ^_^

I can see Sirius Black as a crime lord - hah, no, just kidding. I'm not entirely sure if this is in any way accurate, mind, because I seriously misinterpreted Sirius' character the first time I met him, and I've been selling him woefully short for the last eight months, but hear me out and tell me what you think. ("Telling me what you think", by the way, can legally include whomping me about the head with your desk lamp until I come to my senses.)

Sirius Black I can, if you can believe it, see living in one place, possibly on the outskirts of Bristol or Glasgow - or maybe in Wales - painting and writing for a living. (Gah! **Ducks hail of vengeful desk lamps.**) Or maybe he'd be a globe trotter, off in India snapping photos most of the time, invading National Geographic with his stories. Either way I can see him as a sort of British metropolitan Emily Carr, always shoving ahead in the artistic/academic world.

I arrived at this (admittably wacky) impression, by the way, by re-reading Azkaban. Sirius may be a little wild, but his vocabulary and his way of expressing himself indicate someone who is not only educated but enjoys it as well, and is always eager to learn more. Yeah, I can see him trying to learn Sanskrit or participating in a Kwakwaka'wakw potlatch. (I could really see him chatting avidly with my previous First Nations Studies teacher, Corrine Michel, but that's beside the point.)

I think Severus Snape would still be trapped teaching a bunch of snotty kids in Chemistry. It just seems to be his destiny.

Dumbledore would be dead by now if he were a Muggle, so we needn't worry about him.

Harry, Ron and Hermione fall under the same category, because they're still in school either way and not yet required to know what they're going to do with their lives. (But I think they'd be whining in Career and Personal Planning as much as I do.)

Minerva McGonagall (it's a funny name, I know, but it's not too hard to spell) would be Co-Chief Executive of some aggressive international company. Right now she'd be planning the downfall of the U.S. economy, see if she wouldn't. ^_^

Bah, that's enough for now. I'm sure if I thought hard I could probably come up with lifestyle prospects for every person mentioned in those books, but it occurs to me that most likely no one wants to hear me, and I'm still stuck trying to decide whether the Dementors of Azkaban have a human Warden (yeah, that's the snaggit again).

Hmmm....

by Jemima Steptoe

I've got to agree with Cassandra on Lupin, I think he just has to be at Oxford. And I like your take on Sirius, Cass; I trust you to know him best. I don't think Lupin's in France, but I do think he has some French cousins who have a vineyard and make some very good and well-loved Wizard wines.

Ludo Bagman would be a TV sports commentator (and compulsive gambler - some things stay the same). He would also be doing commercials for those 10-10-whatever long-distance plans (the 'hey, look, I found a dollar! ones). I actually had an in-HP-context idea of Ludo doing print adverts for my Mrs. Moffatt's Magic Meals - "So simple, even I can do it!"

Arthur Weasley would own a big electronics store - lots of Plugs and eckeltriptic appliances.

Rita Skeeter would be a talking head on all the 24-hour news channels every time a scandal broke.

Gilderoy Lockhart would be a self-help guru who goes around giving seminars at $250 a head and autographing his (ghost written) books for his adoring fans.

Well, those are a few I don't think have been mentioned yet.

Snaggit: n. Small section of text. Term coined by moi in commemmoration of my website.

by Cassandra

**Giggles.** I think you have Lockhart there to a tee, Jemima.

And d'you know, I've started liking Ludo a good bit more since I read Tweedys of Yorkshire? You write him as such a teddy-bear I can't help but like him. And I love the convergent track of Romance that he and Jane are one. Heh heh heh. (Oh, say they're on a convergent path of romance! Do do do!)

Speaking of your ficcies, yes, I know, I haven't done any pics for you yet. I tried once, but I kept messing up Irene's face - and after I'd done that for an hour or so, I tried to draw Remus, did the same thing, and gave up in disgust. Maybe I'll try again tonight, eh?

A week late in catching up...

Ludo and Jane, hmm... I think Mr. Tweedy's got 'em pegged, don't you? Y'know, sometimes people are just doomed for each other. I'm going to be really disappointed if

Oh, um, spoiler space

for those who have not read

Goblet of Fire...

if JKR tells us Ludo really is a Death Eater. I honestly think he was just a red herring in GOF, and really is as presented, a stupid git who didn't know when to keep his mouth shut. Bless his heart, I think he's sort of a lovable lug with a devious streak that gets him into trouble, and, like the mammoth in the tar pit, once he's in trouble, all his attempts to get out just make things worse. He's an awfully fun character to write.

Oh, and I have patience on the pictures. I know you have to wait until the muse wants to cooperate.

ROTFLMAO

by Grindylowe

Ludo doing to 10-10-321 commercials is dead on....And I'm sorry about the Lupin transexual comment, I was thinking more along the lines of something to compare to his transforming into a werewolf...so, er, what came to mind was turning into a woman. But I do think Lupin is very masculine. He was cool.

But you know who was cooler?

Wizard Clothing

by Jemima Steptoe

I've seen this topic mentioned before, and there's another go-round of it in progress on the HP newsgroup, so I thought I'd bring it up here. People have asked why Wizards sometimes have so much trouble with Muggle clothing, but sometimes (the kids, at least) seem to have normal shirts/pants on under their school robes, etc. What do Wizards wear when they're just hanging around the house? Does it vary by age/background? I think a big part of the problem (as in the Quidditch World Cup sequence in GoF) is that most Wizards are probably familiar with the general idea of shirts/slacks/jeans/dresses, they just don't understand what Muggle clothing is appropriate in certain situations. By the way, has anyone else seen the movie "Kiki's Delivery Service"? (Very cute movie about a little girl witch.) Kiki always wears a very simple, dark colored dress, and another character comments on how this is one way you can tell she's a witch, by the dress she wears. Seeing a bit of this again the other day, I realized that the dress I envisioned for Irene (in my fanfic) is a brown version of the Kiki dress.

Anyway, what's anyone else's take on How Wizards Dress?

Hmm...

by Mara

That's an interesting topic! As you siad, the students do seem to dress in shirts and slacks, perhaps that is why they never mention muggle clothing problems with the children, and mostly with the adults.

I imagine they wear mostly the cloaks, perhaps with some matching-material pants or something, I really don't know! In the first book when they were slacking it was said that many were seen wearing colored cloaks and wizard hats. They probably wear anything that feels nice and looks interesting. They mess up with MUggle clothing so much ebcause they don't really know what Muggles wear, what they consider to match, they think it's very different from their own clothes, I guess!

What i don't quite understand

by Grindylowe

is the seperation of Muggle society and Wizard society..I mean, we share the same planet and all. And why is Ron's dad so mystified by a telephone if he is a muggle studies master? I dont get it. You;d think they know more thanthey do..where is the line drawn?

Thast's a good question...

by Mara

... since he is a Muggle Studies master! Actually, I think he's so mystified by it becuase he's fascinated by the fact that the Muggles can ahve such great stuff and cool 'toys' without any kind of magic whatsoever. That's maybe why he's so fascinated with everything Muggle, he likes to stare at it and really doens't pay too much attention as to how it actually works. Perhaps?

Maybe...

by Grindylowe

...could be. But they seem so clueless...take the place where the Weasleys live, The Burrow. I know it was far away from where Harry lived, but where was it's location, exactly, that would cause that family to have such a seperation from the muggle world? Where did the kids go to school before Hogwarts? What do they do for fun? Do they only play with other wizard kids? Is it an alternate dimension (I got that impression that some of the Wizard stuff was in anlternate dimension, like Avalon). How similiar is thier culture to ours?
Just wondering.

HP Art! (and a shameless plug)

This was the first HP pic I did, possible characters for an HP RPG page (the girl ended up on the page) she's kindasorta a pic of Mara:

The 2nd is a birthday card for JK Rowling that I did, with Harry, Ron, Hermione and my interpretation of Fluffy. I have 2 other pics I did of Fully, but one is not scanned, and I seem to have misplaced the other one...

Let me know what you think!

If anyone was interested, more of my art is here:

Also, if anyone is interested, I participate in an interesting mailing list HP RPG. This RPG takes place in an American Wizarding school (yet to be named). At the moment we are still deciding where exactly it will be, and a few more details, but hopefully soon it will all be designed and we can start the RP. We won't have much interaction with the actual HP characters, we mostly have all new characters and new ideas for the school. If anyone is interested they can check it out here:

by Grindylowe

he seriously has one...he just EXPLODES and yells at people a lot, expecially in the 3rd and 4th books (though i guess living in a cabinet can do that to you). I hope JK brings out his rage problem more as he gets older, it'll make him more nteresting.

I like Harry well enough, I mean, I have sympathy for him and the end of the 4th book had me floored. He's a pretty good kid dealing well with some awful things. But man, I just totally get Snape. And sometimes I can see why Snape wants to smack him.

And Harry is just too darned young for me.

Up with the plump brunettes!

by Cassandra

Heck, I like conforming to that Great Big Sea line: "... with a girl who's nice and round". (Oh yeah, and the line about the "brown-eyed beauty". Mwah hah. ^_^)

D'you notice Dudley has dark hair, too? And he's far too small - he reminds me for some reason of Eustace Clarence Scrubb from Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I can't imagine him bullying someone as self-sufficient-looking as Daniel Radcliffe's Harry.

And Ron appears to be shorter than Harry.

Bah, okay there are only three characters whose looks satisfy me thus far: Prof. McGonagall, Severus Snape, and Vernon Dursley. And Draco, too, I guess. He looks too cute, in my opinion, but I suppose it must be hard to find an eleven year old with a pointed face and a tendency for sneers. I consider the widow's peak hairline just this side of overkill, however.

Er, rather off-topic: does anyone remember the big debate about Professor Sinistra's gender? The only evidence anyone could come up with that indicated she was female was her dancing with Moody at the Yule Ball? I can't believe I forgot it at the time, but she's also mentioned in Prisoner of Azkaban by Ron as "that Arithmancy witch".

Gilderoy Lockhart rumor

by Shandethe

You've all probably seen on HPgalleries.com that Hugh Grant is rumored to be playing Lockhard in "CoS". I recently heard on the Snape discussion group that he was recently confirmed to be playing Gilderoy. Has anyone else heard this rumor? If so, what do you think?

Not bad, actually

by Jemima Steptoe

Hugh Grant was actually on my Short List for Lockhart after I heard him suggested somewhere a while back. However, my first and still IDEAL choice would be Cary Elwes (Westley in "Princess Bride") - he would be perfect at that pretty, blond, flashing teeth, twinkling eyes, tongue in cheek "Yes, I know I'm irresistably handsome" routine. I think Grant will be fine, though, and Lockhart is one of the few roles where I think they can get away with casting a "movie star" type.

**Brief pause.**

No, not bad serious, Taulai, thank heavens. Just serious. I predict that you will probably either laugh your head off at me or chase me away with an axe. Can't tell which. I'm a bad judge of human nature.

Professor: Fanfic, eh? I'll keep my eye on the ol' fanfic page, then (the one at AL, of course).

Cowboy Bebop fanfic? Of what nature? About what?

I'm madly in love with Spike. Just letting you all know.

Vague attempt at being on topic: Jet was also known as the Black Dog of Ganymede, IIRC. Black Dog of something, at any rate. Coincidence? You decide.

Yes, Jet was known on Ganymede as the Black Dog. That is so eerie!

If you want to see the fanfic (I'm trying not beg here), it's at:
http://dragonfly.cox.miami.edu/bebop/wildhorses.html

It's a Kat-says-Spike-is-NOT-dead story that Taulai and I are working on together, plus a speculative story I'm doing on Vicious and Spike, pre-Bebop.

Er .... art.

by Cassandra

My computer's hooked up to the 'net now, so I can fiddle around with my 300 dpi images, you know, to make them acceptably small. It's also been dubbed Tiberius. My scanner is Percival, my computer is Tiberius, and my printer has been named Claudius. And my monitor is Harold.

Anyway, now that Tiberius is behaving as much as is possible for a machine with a psychotic Roman emperor for a namesake (at least I didn't name it Caligula), I can edit my files and upload them. Here are .... a few.

giggle.jpg. Only I know what they're really laughing at.

rivals.jpg. Teja. Here's that pic I mentioned way back when. Hope Mrs Black likes it. >:)

scars.jpg. Er - I don't know. I was listening to Oasis one day and this sort of popped into my head. I figured it'd been too long since I drew something dark and angsty and dark, so I did it. Note the scars all down his back.

I'm going to go crawl off and work on my fic now.

by Taulai

Oh, those are all gorgeousness and gorgeosity!!

giggles: Oh MY what adorable expressions! I love seeing our usually melancholy and angsty DogBoy in a moment of mirth. Just wait 'til Jemima gets a load of her Remus. What a honey!

rivals: BWAHAHAHA!!! I love his gritted teeth. He's just so...delicious! (The bartender's comments are hilarious.)

scars: thunk (sound of Taulai passing out stone cold on the floor and needing a cold shower, even so). He's so unconscious of them. As if he's getting dressed and only the person who was in bed with him (now who could that be, huh, Cassandra?) notices them. Just makes you want to break out the Bactine. And then the patchouli-scented massage oil... (works wonders on scars, you know...)

So now that you have your whole cabinet of ancient world leaders and twisted personalities hooked up and talking to each other, do we get MORE TREATS MORE OFTEN?!?? HMMMMMM????

You said it, I didn't. ^_^ Actually, I don't know what sort of context this pic would fit into. I just like the image of Sirius with scars all over his back - physical scars to match the emotional ones, you know ...

Or maybe I'm just a bit of a masochist.

Just makes you want to break out the Bactine. And then the patchouli-scented massage oil... (works wonders on scars, you know...)

Er. Ah. Yes. Hang on, let me go get an ice pack before my keyboard melts. (Shame on you, Taulai. Indirectly sabotaging my equipment!)

Yes, you will get more TREATS now. But first I need to get around to doing all the piccies for Jemima's fic that I've had sitting around in my head for weeks. And before that, I need to get a new sketchbook.

[Warning: out-of-context exuberance upcoming]

Christian Bale as Remus Lupin?

by Shandethe

I found his picture on HPgalleries.com a few days ago. I think he'd make an adorable Lupin myself (though I'm still clinging to Peter Wingfield.) You've probably seen him as Laurie in "Little Women" with Winona Ryder, and also in a movie I've never seen called "Swing Kids."

He's cute! And his voice is nice, too. Anyone else care to weigh in?

I saw this on the hpgalleries site when I went there to look at stills from the 2nd trailer (oh, WOW, is my reaction to the stills so far). He's rather young (according to IMDB, he's not even 30 yet), and he's not someone I'd ever thought of, but after looking at his pics on imdb, I'm game to give him a chance. Trust me, they could do a lot worse! Go look him up on the Internet Movie Database at imdb.com - there are a couple of really nice pics of him at the premieres of Midsummer Night's Dream and Velvet Goldmine and yeah, hey, he's cute enough for Lupin in my book.

**Waggles hand in classic gesture of uncertainty.**

by Cassandra

I went and looked him up, too. He'd be ... tolerable as Remus, but I just don't think he fits the part. He could probably remedy that problem, if he's as good an actor as he's touted as, but ... no, I just don't see him as Remus. Remus Lupin shouldn't be mischievous, should he? He should rather be the model of a man trying to atone for past sins, and trying to cope with griefs that keep hounding him, et cetera, et cetera. You know what I mean. Solemn. Scholarly. Sober. Peter Wingfield is the best we've found so far, methinks.

My mental vision of the perfect Remus would be rather pale and narrow-faced, maybe with grey eyes and a long nose, and definitely with straight, light hair that can be brushed back a la your average 20s British schoolmaster. Someone who'd look good in armbands and rumpled tweed.

But there's probably no chance at all of us ever finding someone that perfect, so lead on, say I.

(On second thought, considering our luck with Sirius - even if Lynch might not actually be cast as him - maybe we will find the perfect Remus. Let's cross our fingers, yes?)

Hmm....

by Shandethe

The only thing I have against Christian Bale playing Remus Lupin is seeing him next to Alan Rickman. They're supposed to be contemporaries--but the truth is, Rickman's a LOT older, and it's going to show, even though it looks like they've made up Alan to look younger. He'd be adorable in the role, though--but I still prefer Peter Wingfield. (Keep yer fingers crossed, ladies.)

Oh, and if you want to see some niiiice Peter pics, go here. If you really want a thrill, click on 'The Dragon'. You have to hunt for them, but there are pictures of Peter in the bathtub! I love him as the Pirate King in "Pirates of Penzance," he's a hoot. I'll tell you who else I love in "Midsummer" is Roger Rees, who plays Peter Quince, the leader of the players (who sits in the wings and prompts them throughout their performance). He was the lead in the Royal Shakespeare Company's amazing stage version of Nicholas Nickleby, and if he were still that age, instead of as old and weathered as he is in "Midsummer," I'd be lobbying for him as Sirius.

Also, some other news. I don't know if PBS is a worldwide thing, but we have it here in New York, and there's this movie type thing. Zoe Wanamaker (That coach woman) and the woman who plays Petunia Dursley are both in it. Goes by the name of Gormenghast. Heard of it? Far as I can tlel everyone in it is completely nutters. Used to be a book I hear. Never read it.

Also, My dear friend Andy Hagan (you bastard) has links to several pictures that are semi-interesting (Galleons, Sickles, Knuts, fonts and whathave you) I think Hagans is getting annoyed with it all. Bully for him. Look at http://harry-potter-movies.net/index2.php if you REALLY must see it for youself.

Some interesting news that can be viewd more fully at Hagin's site: 'Parently, Coca Cola is going to be having a contest where you can win money but THAT'S NOT ALL FOLKS! You get to be a Hogwarts student for five days, see a castle, ride a broom and some other such stuff. Also, Scolastic is having a tourney of some kind. I'm off to look at it myself. Grieve with me, sisters! **Sniff.**

When I told Sirius (hypothetically, that is) what might be representing him on screen, his first impulse was to get belligerent; the second was to scream and run for his Mam (aka Jo Rowling). I have captured both scenes for posterity. I'm sure he considers the cause a good one.

There was another side to this scene, but since it included words that should only be heard by those 734 years old and over, I discarded it.

Featherspy: I don't CARE if it's improbable that the pallid little pipsqueak will actually get the role: it's enough that ANYONE would even consider him to drive me over the edge!

In the Dictionary Under the Word 'Git'

by Jemima Steptoe

I don't know, that's just how he strikes me. Heh, nice theraputic art, Cassandra. For what it's worth, I saw a couple of posts on the ff.net HP forum lamenting this as well, and also pointing out that he's All Wrong. John Cleese and Alan Rickman give me the impression that they've paid at least passing attention to what the fans have said about casting, so if they hear the fans bashing on this guy, maybe they'll have second thoughts. We can only hope.

It's something about the squinty little eyes and the gormless jaw.

... You know, I never realised until recently just how hugely popular Our B'ys truly are. Makes me feel a bit jealous, frankly.

I'm going to console myself by reading The Tweedys of Yorkshire again and watching Lord Peter Wimsey strut around on the little screen. Heh, I love that man.

No, no, Peter's better looking than that

by Jemima Steptoe

This git strikes me as more the Crabbe/Goyle type. I think that's one thing that really irks me, he doesn't look intelligent enough for Sirius. Peter should be more of the pale, mousy sort (no pun). Hee hee, maybe when you get finished reading Tweedys again, you can do some drawings... And which Lord Peter, Ian Carmichael (the original) or Edward Petherbridge (later)? I haven't seen any of those in years!

Hint, hint, hint ...

by Cassandra

Yes, ma'am, I'll do them drawin's fer you, so I will. **Scuffles her toe on the ground.**

Hell, he isn't even right for Crabbe or Goyle (not heavily built enough). He just looks more like your miscellaneous gormless, Slytherin model of juvenile delinquency, fit to be used as a crowd-filler and nothing more. The only place I could imagine him occupying in any Harry Potter movie is among the seventh years at the Serpent table during the Sorting scene. Bah.

My band teacher would make a good Peter Pettigrew. He looks so like him it's frankly uncanny. He's very short, flabby, and has a mousy little face with a pointy nose and tiny eyes. He'd need his hair bleached, though. He'd also need some attitude work; somehow I don't think Peter should be allowed to yell "STRAIGHTEN UP, GODDAMN YOU!" at Sirius and Remus just as they're about to kill him.

>I think that's one thing that really irks me, he doesn't look intelligent enough for Sirius.<

Too right! He looks just about bright enough to operate an electronic can-opener. Sirius Black should have intelligence veritably snapping out of those black eyes of his! (Pardon me while I swoon.)

Ian Carmichael, but I want to see the Edward Petherbridge version(s), too. Hee hee, I do so love our foppish Lord.

OK I just got this idea... Wallace Shawn. Anyone kno who that is? I didn't know his name I just had him in my mind so I went and found out. He played the father in disney's Just Like Dad. He's probly kind of.. old for the part but he fits the description. Only thing is he seems a bit too nice and happy but ya kno he's an actor so it could work.

A call for sympathy

by

I'm not sure how many of you are aware of the Elfwood/Lothlorien gallery, and if you aren't then certainly feel free to ignore this post, but so many of us seem to travel in the same circles, I thought a few of you might be visitors or members but, like me, be blissfully unaware of the recent events there.
Please go here for details: http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/
It is very sad that such a wonderful place should be attacked by it's own members, and although I'm hoping they will manage to make the place survive through this mess, I'll certainly wish them the best even if that doesn't happen.
The reason I'm posting this is to alert those of you who knew this gallery before the mess, and let you know if you wish to send sympathies and support, please write to Thomas@elfwood.com I'm sure they won't mind if you're not a member but want to wish them well anyhow. If you want to wish them ill, please go screw yourself.
I realize many of you probably don't even know who I am because I don't post often, and I may be bringing my forum curse along with me by posting here, but I just felt the word and sympathy needed to be spread. Thank you for reading.

The joys of Harry hype! Bless you, ye merchants of mayhem!

by The Lauderdale

So okay, not all of the things that come out of it are good. I could name certain pictorial portrayals of the precocious Hermione, for one. (Nice alliteration, ne?) But today I was at Books A Million and I decided to go check out the Harry Potter table, and what do I find? Diane Duane's "Wizard Abroad". Honestly, do you know how long it's taken me to find that book? How long it takes me to find any one of her Young Wizard books?

So this is a good thing, because with publishers wanting to cash in on the Harry-and-that-whole-wizard-thing hype, the books should be fairly easy to find for a while to come. So anyone, if you happen to see "So You Want to be a Wizard" by Diane Duane, by itself or in the company of sequels, do be sure to snatch it up. Great series.

I adore Diane Duane!

by Cassandra

I think my favourite Wizardry book is Deep Wizardry - the first one I ever found. But Wizard Abroad is an extremely close second.

Actually, speaking of A Wizard Abroad, I'd like to make it clear that the last two installments in the Sirius Black trilogy I've been working on (for the last year) were thought up before I read it. To anyone who's read that last Diane Duane book, the theme is hideously similar.

... I really rather wish they'd stop lumping all children's/young adult fantasy together as "Harry Potter prototypes". It's almost insulting, particularly where it applies to books like the Wizardry series, which are akin to Harry Potter only in that they include magic.

Yes...

by The Lauderdale

>>I think my favourite Wizardry book is Deep Wizardry - the first one I ever found.

Me too--the first one, I mean, and the favorite. Because of Ed, I think. I remember, I was fourteen and I found this copy in my school library with a lovely sleek Ed leaping in the foreground (makes it sound like a horse book, eh?) I love Ed, he just found this place in my brain and and settled down, and he's been swimming around there ever since....

>>... I really rather wish they'd stop lumping all children's/young adult fantasy together as "Harry Potter prototypes".

Exactly. While in a way it is helpful because it makes certain books easier to find (see above--it was so gosh darned hard to find these books for myself, I have no idea why) it's indicative of one of the darker trends of the Potter hype. For example, I was loping around this afternoon on Amazon looking at reviews. It's like these two types of readers have been spawned: the pro-Potter snobs and the anti-Potter snobs, and it's hard to say which are worse. The anti-Potter snobs are these bunch who have decided that just because a lot of people like "Harry Potter" it must suck something fierce. I'm sure we've all met these "mainstream-is-evil" guys: they are extraordinarily prevalent, not just in relation to the Potter books but in all walks of life.

But then the pro-Potter snobs are awful. They've made it into their religion, which wouldn't be so bad if they weren't rabidly intolerant of anything un-Potterish. Looking at those Amazon reviews for a moment: "So You Want To Be a Wizard." There aren't that many negative reviews, but of those that are, the primary two trends are

A. I thought this was going to be like Harry Potter but it's not, so it sucks, and

B. Diane Duane describes stuff and sometimes the magic is handled in a technical, scientific way that I'm not used to. Where's J. K. Rowling? This sucks!

While the good reviews generally run along the lines of, "This is a good book to read while you're waiting for the next "Harry Potter" novel to come out."

Of course I'm probably exaggerating to a certain extent--still....

Harry Potter vs. Nancy Stouffer

by Jemima Steptoe

Okay, everyone remember Nancy Stouffer, the alleged "author" who is in a lawsuit against JKR and friends because she (Stouffer) makes some claim to the word Muggles, blah blah blah? Someone on the alt.fan.harry-potter newsgroup actually got hold of a copy of Ms. Stouffer's "The Legend of Rah and the Muggles," has read it, and has posted a thorough synopsis and review that is utterly hilarious. Highly recommended that you read this, and be warned, if you're like me, you will laugh out loud...

Enjoy.

So, Rah and the Muggles is self-published?

by Cassandra

GEE, I WONDER WHY?

Bravo, Rat! A masterfully expository thorn in the side of Nancy Stouffer's ineffectual bid for fame, fortune and sympathy!

(Rah and the Muggles sound incredibly like something I wrote when I was ten, except my sad little attempt at authorship was only seven pages long, and therefore greatly less painful to the reader.)

So ... The Larry and Lilly books are supposed to be published later this year? Oh, please, give me a break. Does she actually think that claiming that J.K. Rowling pinched her ideas for a series that was first published three years ago will do anything other than invite thousands of people worldwide to laugh at her?

No, don't answer that. I've lost every shred of empathy I might ever have had for Stouffer's situation.

In fact, I'm torn. I can't seem to decide whether her frequent tantrums over trademark and copyright stem from A) a sort of crazed attempt to garner publicity and sympathy through falsely denouncing Jo; B) her own filching of Rowling's ideas and a rather strange attempt to get some money out of it; or C) your average sub-normal-IQ-generated paranoia. Whichever it is, it still reveals a variant of mad brain stupidity that smacks of frequent overdosings on Sesame Street and Barney as a child. Terrible stuff.

Um. Yeah. Dear me. Even as a ten-year-old I was aware that whatever I wrote was far from quality literature. It's rather sad that a grown woman is suffering from a delusion that most children manage to escape.

I should hope so!!

by Featherspy

Who in their right mind would publish it? I've been following this for quite some time and know some more facts about this. Apparently, Stuffer claims that her book had been published before and made some amopunt of money that would have made publishing history. Of course, she has absolutely NO record of this, owing to some sort of cave in which destroyed her "offices" by which I mean a room in her house. Also, she personally (neither does anyone else) does not own a copy of any of her books! Gee, she must have had SOME left over! Also, she claims to have met A.A. Levine and his wife (the guy who discovered harry). However, Arthur has never been married. Hmmmm...

I've FOUND SIRIUS!

by Cassandra

YES! I have finally found our choice actor for the live-action representation of The Man.

Sorry, Taulai, but I did finally watch The Usual Suspects (which was an awesome movie) and came up with the conclusion that ... well ... Gabriel Byrne isn't really suited to play Sirius. That's what I think, anyway. (Go ahead, try to change my mind. Beat me with a wet sponge, I won't give in!)

Has anyone here seen The Secret of Roan Inish? Great movie, ranks up there with The Waking of Ned Devine, which isn't to say that it's particularly sophisticated, but that it's fun. Anyway, a certain very Irish actor named John Lynch plays Fiona's cousin Tadhg in Roan Inish. He's tall, dark-haired and dark-eyed, has a bony, angular face and a nose that could frighten Byrne out of his wits. He's the perfect Sirius, even if he does tend to look distressingly like that freak who plays Ross in Friends - from a certain angle, anyway. And he has a wonderful Irish accent, which counts for quite a few points with me. ^_~ (But that really wouldn't stop me from suggesting that they dub over Alan Doyle's voice if the chance presented itself.)

I looked long and hard for a picture of John Lynch, but this is the only half-way decent one I could find. It's from This Is the Sea, which coincidentally also stars Gabriel Byrne himself. (I keep thinking we have got to find a role for him - and for Colin Firth - simply because they're both too good to pass up.)

His hair's too short, of course, so you'll just have to imagine how he'd look with it down to his elbows. Sinister, I should think.

Yeah, that's it, sinister. With lines under his eyes, too.

I only hope he's capable of acting tough. A Sirius wannabe is just no good unless he can act like a bloodthirsty madman who collects mismatched kidneys and sometimes exclaims things like "I must keep the wall WET!" (like 'Nny does).

Well, if Mrs Black would have a fit, then rest assured I will go to any lengths to convince JK Rowling to use Lynch. >:) Short of coercion, that is. Well - maybe not ...

To tell the truth, he isn't exactly what I imagine Sirius to look like (well, obviously), but he's the closest anyone has come yet. And at least he has straight hair and dark eyes. Curly hair and blue eyes (not to mention a nose that would go well on Havelock Vetinari) are not to be thought of.

Intensity is the word (which I didn't think of last night because I was half asleep). John Lynch can look intense even while gutting fish.

I watched Roan Inish again last night. Saw Tadhg nearly impale a coworker's hand with a gutting knife after the latter remarked that "his brain's fulla shoe polish" (Tadhg's, that is). Also noted his angular features and ill-shaven chin.

Nobody laugh, please, but I went rootling around and found another couple of far better pictures of Lynch. In a jealous rage I fear I cropped one of them quite a lot (I dare you to guess which), but not so much as to - em - destroy its charms. You can find 'em both here.

A wee little adrenaline rush? Tsk, Taulai, I am disappointed in you. (I try not to look at that particular image too often, personally. It makes my clothes feel too hot.)

Er - I would personally suggest sending a multitude of letters to JK Rowling. She's more likely to listen to us than Warner Brothers is, that's for sure.

And if that doesn't work, we can always turn to more direct measures, e.g. abduct the CEO of WB and threaten to turn him into a (as I recall) botched hedgehog pincushion if our demands are not met.

Or we could sniff out ol' Lynch hisself and schmooze up to him until he agrees to volunteer. Most unfortunately, we'd be forced to rein in our hormones in those circumstances. You know how I hate doing that.

Chicken Run on HBO! (NOT OT)

by Jemima Steptoe

Well, not entirely OT... Only sort of. Anyone who has been reading my fanfic linked from the Hogwarts Library page above knows that the saga of Jane Tweedy's School Days is a crossover between the Wizarding world of Hogwarts and the movie "Chicken Run." Well, if you have not seen "Chicken Run" yet, it is on HBO starting tomorrow (Saturday) night. Watch it! It's great!

And if you've read my fic, pay attention during the movie for the first big scene inside the Tweedys' house (begins with the remains of dinner on the table). Watch for Ascalaphus the Owl in his glass dome, and the portraits behind and beside Mrs. Tweedy's desk of Mrs. T's Grandfather Orpheus Pryce the Unfortunate Squib, and his Aunt Lucretia Pryce (she's a lot harder to see).

Not that it matters, but... You *can't* see Aunt Lucretia in "Chicken Run." You get a vague, general impression of the "other" portrait in the CR making of book (not even a very good one there), and I've invented her from that. As Mr. Tweedy would say, "It's all in me head." Orpheus Pryce is very visible, however. 'Kay, I'll knock off the Chicken Lectures now.
