I don't remember all the specifics but I believe it was PLT 71 1957 and if you type that in a search engine you'll find a lot of info. Maybe you can share what your dad may have talked about that happened on that tragic day.

I know my father Staff Sergeant Verne Martin Jr. was there as a DI during that incident, and the DI involved was a good friend. My father left the Corps after his enrollment was up, because he did not like the outcome of the congressional ruling, and felt the congress was weakening the training. He did not talk alot about his time in the Corps.

I was at Parris Island in 1957. I talked to recruts of Sgt. Mathew McKeon's Plt. after the accident, who said they were being held for the Court Marshall. I was on a work party just before gradutation. They told me Sgt. McKeon was not at fault, it was just a very unfortunate accident.

I was there, although in another platoon. Sgt McQwen was the D I that marched his platoon into the swamps
out near the shooting range and some of them drowned,
I don't remember how many.

In response to your request, there are TWO (2) books written about the incident...both scarce...
They are titled:
"RIBBION CREEK...The Marine Corps On Trial" by
BGEN William B. McKean published by Dial Press 1958
Library of Congress Card #: 58-12776 in contains a list of those killed in that incident.
The second book is entitled:
"Court-Marial at Parris Island" by John C. Stevens III
published by the Naval Institute Press 1999
ISBN #: 1-55750-814-3
The Men that ied on April 08, 1958 in Ribbion Creek were
1. Thomas Hardeman,
2. Donald Francis O'Shea,
3. Charles Francis Reilly,
4. Jerry Lamonte Thomas,
5. Leroy Thompson,
6. Norman Alfred Wood...
You may find copies on Ebay or abe.com
but they are really rare...

Are talking about the Ribbon Creek incident? There are three good books out about that day, and I know that the Sgt who was in charge of the march is still alive

I can help a little. I was at New River, NC, next to Camp LeJuene at the time 1955 or 1956 and Sargeant McKeon was the DI at P.I. He miscalculated the depth of the river at a certain point and 6 Marine recruits drowned. They had full field packs. He served some brig time and was busted and transferred to LeJuene.
