so many things suck, and still sell. So the question is, if you can't have both, would you rather write books that suck, but sell lots, or books that don't suck, but don't sell?

it shows plenty of excellent perception. But maybe if you have a book club, you should examine the literary devices of hack writers: what the devices are, and why they grab people's attention. Then, if you wanted, you could try to write a novel based on the formulas you discovered. You might have fun with it and make a bunch of money.

someone sent me an Amazon gift certificate today - but I think I will buy the Sedaris "When You Are Engulfed in Flames", or one of the many books mentioned in Newsweek this week.
Sorry, Joyce.

I bought three books via Amazon the other day; the first I've bought in months.

I told myself I wasn't buying another book until I gave away some of the (too many) I have. But I saw three that appealed to me, and I've much enjoyed reading again. I'd quit for a while and now I'm loving it again.
At last, I think I've read more this week than I've spent on the computer. That can't be anything but good.

I am going to buy the Sedaris book & one by Elizabeth Berg. It's summer & I just want entertaining reading. I've got plenty of heavier stuff waiting - and waiting.
What did you get, Isabel?
