I was not around when Forest Evashevski was the Hawkeyes' head coach, but I well remember his tenure as athletic director, when he systematically sabotaged coaches Jerry Burns and Ray Nagel by destroying the recruitment program and fomenting dissension among the assistant coaches and players. He may have been a good coach, but he left Iowa under a very dark cloud, with the State's Attorney General commenting that Evashevski "has done [Iowa football] a grave disservice." You could look it up. It was common knowledge, all through the 1960s, that Evy was deliberately destroying the football program so that the fans would demand his return as head coach. Instead, he was widely despised because we all knew what he was up to--but he got away with it (for a while) because he was such a legend. Iowans hove a collective sigh of relief when we finally saw the back of him.
