Kinesthetic Mechanic

Response to That Explains a LOT of Things... - "The Feel"

As a coach and a competitor I was either advantaged or disadvantaged with mechanical knowledge of my sport (not golf). One of my local competitors was a 'kid' who had nothing to do but practice. His mechanics were terrible and his coach was more interested in results than form. I don't even think the coach saw the mechanical faults he was so focused on the results.

Fortified with continuous practice the 'kid' beat me many times. However when faced with the need to stay in school his practice time trailed off. When subsequently he lost 'it' in a competition he not only never got it back but dropped out of the sport entirely.

In my case I was my own 'kinesthetic mechanic' and tried to teach all those I coached how to be their own. In the kid's case neither he nor his coach served that function and once lost, 'it' could not be recovered.

There are many tactics to work through periods of poor feel but there is no 'tactic' to fix bad mechanics.
