The first time I went to a tour event I was struck by one thing especially - Every time a pro swung there was the 'click' of perfect contact. This was especially notable because I so seldom heard it myself when playing.
I choose to believe that the difference was not just due to talent or eye-hand coordination but that there must be a fundamental error in my technique. The error for me (and 90+% of amateurs) was in impact position.
I (and most) resembled the last diagram vs the other two. This accounts for the popularity of high lofted woods among amateurs (pros have different reasons) vs irons. If your impact position resembles the last diagram your only good contact option is a sweeping blow. Otherwise it's chunk or skull.
One goal of this drill is to get you to a correct impact position. Once you get this you will loose your fascination for 7 and 9 woods unless you play on courses with tour condition greens.
