Bertholy explicitly talks about less than full swings. WHile you can not 'drop' if the club only gets to vertical on the backswing you can never the less use the claw and increase wrist cock and change plane on the downswing. Most short backswing pros in fact do this.
The action of the claw is absolutely a power source. Note that the action of the 'Claw' from the top produces a torque on the shoulders (through the rod) as well as moving the club down independent of that torque. However this will be more difficult to model mathematically
Bertholy does talk about pulling with the lead arm but that is not emphasized with as many words IMHO because that is not the difficult and unnatural part of this.
