Response to Starting the Down Swing |
| Many in this DG came to SA through NG. Peter, Lyle, and myself to name just the posters in this thread. I prefer "simple" and less analysis as well. But simple does not mean "less precise". About a year ago the point was made ( I think by Peter ) that all fine athletes in any sport take great care at learning the fine details of the movements required for championship level performance. Greg Maddux, talking about his recent "troubles", says his mechanics are off! There's throwing a baseball ( me ), and there's THROWING a baseball ( Greg Maddux ). I have no desire to throw like Greg, so I will not put the study and effort into the mechanics of throwing that Mr. Cy Young does. I do have a desire to become a scratch golfer, and so I am putting in as much time and effort as practical with both my study and my work.
The Bertholy Benefits are that his teaching helps the DEDICATED STUDENT learn the correct movements with a precision that ensures a correct movement. A good example is the basic fundamental of retaining the angle. Go to the NG board and you will see Kirk recommend the "pump drill" often. It is a great drill, and does teach the concept of what is required. Now, read the posts from Bertholy about starting down, The Master Movement, increasing the wrist cock, and so on. Very precise and detailed about how to effect maximum retention of the angle. Drills and exercises for increasing your strength and flexibility to improve in this most critical part of the swing. The pump drill is fine for the average golfer, but to move beyond average just takes work, and to go from above average to expert takes dedication, which most people do not have. (NG promise of "longer straighter shots in 30 days- guaranteed" is true and not true.)
Concerning the movement of this conversation being conventional in nature: IMO, the more developed a player's swing is, CG or SA, the greater the "blur" between the two methods. At impact there is no difference. Bertholy taught CG golf. But look at Moe and Hogan as they start down and you will see they both have that "awkward bow legged" position referenced above. So hang in there, this Dg is the best there is - a true forum. Best wishes on attaining whatever level of performance and enjoyment you desire. |
