I agree at the end knees are touching each other, one way or the other. However what escaped your finely attuned caustic mind is the different concepts involved in the two cases.

Toski, Bertholy, and so many others, want you to start with the lead knee, keeping the trail side quite for a short while. The ‘cymbal-school-of-teaching', on the other hand, is more along the line of starting the down swing with an aggressive pushing of from the trail foot.

Two different uses of the lower body. The first I would prefer with a lead side oriented flail type of swing, the other more with a trail side oriented hitting type of swing.
