Response to Jim Flick on how to start the downswing

Most of us in SA are trying to stop spinning. The problem with the typical move of the lower body in a CG swing is the that the average golfer will turn the hips too early. It is impossible to come outside-in and cause a slice if the hips are not already turned (Rober Baker last year on Golf Talk Live). However, I think SA has gone too far in talking about it being a "Just arms swing". As Peter has pointed out the video tells the Truth! Todd Graves does bend the lead kneee over the lead foot at the initiation of the downswing! The critical issue is that this is a linear not a rotational move. Sam Snead had a tremendous bow of the lead leg towards the target at intiation of the downswing. This actually inhibits the premature rotation of the hips in the same way that a wide stance does. I seem to remember another of Peter's posts that talks about dropping a beach ball held between the legs as a drill to initiate the swing. This is excellent! The trick is to maintain the trail leg in its backswing position rather than to let it move in tandem with the lead leg (sliding).
