Rev,

This is an interesting discussion and I'm interested in your thoughts about developing "feel". I've often wondered what good athletes have that the rest of us don't. Reflexes? Sure, but how good do your reflexes have to be to hit a stationary golf ball?

We had a discussion a while ago about proprioception - the ability to sense where your various body parts are in relation to one another. It's the "sense" that allows us to put our finger in our ear with our eyes closed. I have a hunch that it's tied in somehow with the ability that good golfers have to sense/feel where their hands are at the top of the swing and whether they're holding the angle or not, etc.

Do you think that kind of ability might affect someone's ability to feel? That is, a golfer with poor proprioception will always have trouble feeling whether they're in the right positions and will have to do the best they can with video or a coach, while someone with good proprioception is better able to sense/feel the position their body's in.

If that theory holds any water at all, a related question is whether we can tune up our proprioceptors to develop better feel.
