| If you check out all the high speed photos of today, these extreme shaft bends are not seen. This is not to say that a small amount of bends do not exist. For example, just before impact, the shaft bows backwards, away from the target. This may be another "unexpected" behaviour of the shaft but is easily explained with centripetal inertia of the clubhead.
I think it's safe to assume these extreme shaft bends of yesteryear are artifacts. It's not the shaft or the clubheads. They used similar quality steel shafts and similarly weighted heads.
