Response to Illusion |
| Peter, I have a video called "Facts of Golf" produced by an English engineer by the name of Theo Luxton. He is very pro-flail, and this is what he had to say about the extreme shaft bends you see in the old B&W photos.
"These photographs don't represent a moment in time. These cameras use focal plane shutters. The film is exposed through a moving slot to get a more even exposure. It works great for still photos, but can give you distorted views of a fast moving objects".
If the part of the photo on the right side (of the Nicklaus photo) was exposed a fraction of a second before the left side (ie. moving slot going from right to left), you can see how the clubhead would have travelled further down its path during this time, giving us the impression of an extreme shaft bend.
Jono.
