Response to Memorizing through the sixth grade

Of course not. The real goal of any math teacher is to
facilitate conceptual understanding. Rote learning is just
a base to facilitate that but it is critical. Many students
get through high school with keystrokes and
have zero understanding of concepts. To understand concepts
you have to be able to "turn things over" in your brain.
