Response to Christmas wish list

Cause he can't. But you can....only you.

JK - "Consistency. I must be able to consistently play week after week without any major breakdown in the swing. If I hit a bad shot, I want to feel that I know what I did wrong so I am cognizant of it for the next shot."

Coming at this the wrong way for two reasons. First, your are human, and even the pros go through stretches where they "breakdown". Second, and I touched on this before in another reply to you, your on course thinking is a little off...You don't want to be thinking about the bad shot you just hit, and you definitely don't want to be thinking about how to correct it on the next shot. Tough pill to swallow, but somebody has to say it - You will never be consistent thinking like this.

JK - "Power. Like it or not, golf has become a game of distance. I need to hit the ball far enough as to leave me a middle iron to the green. 3-4-5 hybrid/iron are below average percentage shots."

You can learn the things you need to learn to be able to hit the ball far. They are all over this forum. It is common knowledge. But you must practice those things enough so that you can execute on demand.

JK - "Replication. I want to be able to duplicate my swing for all the hitting clubs in my bag. Driver, woods, hybrids, irons, and wedges should all have the basic setup/swing. I do not want to have a swing philosophy for my irons and a different version for the driver."

Same as above. The basic components of the swing are the same, not just for every club in the bag, but for every golfer that makes a fine swing. But understand that as you get better, one of the joys of the game is to be able to change your basic swing to fit the needs of the moment. Think Tiger Driver, Tiger three wood, Tiger Stinger three wood. You must master the basics found in all swings, all swing styles. That is the house...how you decorate and furnish is your swing.

JK - "Reliability. I want a swing that does not require constant practice and vigilance. I want to go to the range to work on a specific drill (and for fun). I do not want to go to work on the fundamentals because something went horribly wrong during a round and I need to figure out what happened. (this is my worst nightmare)"

Do you really want this? The only way to get this is to practice your swing enough so that it becomes embedded into the deepest part of your being - a place far removed from your conscious mind, from active memory and deliberate direction. You can build a swing that operates at this level. It is entirely within your capability - you've done it with other things you "have to have" and rely on daily. The hindrance here is the sheer amount of work you must put in to get to this point, and the danger that you will be doing the wrong things and ingrain something you shouldn't.

The Santa analogy is a great one though. This is how most people approach golf improvement - They want it if they can have Santa give it to them, buy a dvd that promises longer straighter in 60 days or your money back, see improvement in 30 days guaranteed, blah...blah...blah. Attend a golf school, read a book. The only real way to get it is to work....Santa can't do that for you!
