The purpose of the trainer is to limit/eliminate wrist 'cock'. The point of LPG is that the forearm and the club form a single 'lever' and the bend is at the elbow only.

As McIrishman said the ball is played off the trail foot because that is the advised way to produce a proper descending blow with the swing since there is no instructed shift to the lead foot. It's a 'cheat' in much the same way that 2" overlength clubs is a 'cheat' to try and produce 'normal' golf performance.
