The purpose of the trainer is to keep a flat lead wrist at impact. JK was trying to find a way to teach hacks to keep a flat lead wrist at impact on short shots when invented the trainer and then made the 'greatest physics discovery in the history of golf'. Also in LPG there is approx a 15 degree wrist cock if I remember correctly. It is a fire and fall back swing which is why I said that the ball position is related to the swing method. I can see how you would think of the ball position as a cheat but to me it is not a cheat it is simply part of the system.
Hmmm if you hit balls off of the lead foot with the trainer on you should achieve good impact position in regards to the lead arm and clubshaft. You might have to shift your weight in order to do so.
