I while back I created a drill based on a clip of Hogan I've posted here where the TOS position has the trail elbow 'on station' as Hogan had and Dustin Johnson shows in the clip. Not only did I find it 'possible' to hit from this position I also found it MUCH more consistent and with no significant loss of distance. This was also the case with some others here that tried the drill and at least one reported adopting it as his regular swing. I'm thinking about the same again.
While I found it VERY difficult to get my trail elbow to this position once it 'got away' (and found the same with another that I showed the drill in person) it was VERY simple to swing if you never let it leave.
