I am at another crossroads and don't know what to do! I have tried both CG & SA w/mixed results for both.
W/CG I feel a lot looser in my swing & grip when it is on, crush my irons and 5 wood (6 iron up to 200 yards off turf, 9 iron up to 150), but I can not hit a driver! If I am in synch I can hit between 240-260 w/my 5 wood, so not a big need for a driver, but could hit possible 300 yards. Another downside is consistency w/my swing. One other plus is that I can get CG Instruction localy and have a guy I like.
W/SA I was hitting the ball w/driver 290-300 yards-but only for a week then I lost "it", bad side is I feel very tense in my grip and swing compared to CG and have a really hard time relaxing. I have bough tthe BGG Golf tapes, but can not hit any woods or mid-high irons, HSS-forget it I stunk, Natural Golf I did very well at times in the past, hit my 5 wodd well, but NO consitency at all.
Overall even when I hitting the ball very well my scores are not any better then before when I played my chopped up version of SA. I like the high ball flight w/CG, but have been able to hit it high w/low irons w/SA.
I am just stuck!!! I have been playing golf for 4-5 years now and feel like I should be able to hit consitantly and score in the 80's, but instead no matter what i have tried I hit in the high 90's to 100's.
So has anybody else hit my scores and used SA to lower their scores in a month to the 80's from high 90's??? What did you use? Should I save up and just go to a SA School, is this what will break the funk?
The fact that you feel 'tight' when doing SA has more to do with your interpretation of SA than what the SA systems necessarily require. All that is needed that is 'tight' vs CG is the lead hand grip.
If you loose strokes on full swing shots (tee and fairway) then focus on full swing. If you loose strokes from 100 yards & in the focus on short game.
IMHO the best way to correct faults on full swing shots is to learn to hold the angle and develop a correct path. Holding the angle will stop the fat/thin shots. Path will stop the pushes/pulls. If you have a problem with curving and grip adjustments won't fix it, focus on keeping your nose over your trail knee and your lead arm triceps in contact with your chest.
These fixes will work for either SA or CG. Many find more consistency with SA than CG but this depends on your 'interpretation' of SA.
I was visiting Kuykendalls site today to find out about the "sit down" move which I really can't do.There was a post from a Dr Modeer where Jack advised him that as his arms start back and down, his body will squat slightly in anticipation of the hit. Actually he says it occurs .1 second before your hand starts down. He also says that what you feel happening is often not actually happening.
So, first practice swinging with your trail hand in your bare feet (without a ball) so that you can feel the shift into the front side. Then add a ball and hit it short and then gradually lengthen it. Keep your head over your rear knee. Practice picking a target to hit the ball towards or practice throwing the handle at the target. When you feel comfortable with this go to full swings and either throw the handle at the target or hit the ball towards the target.
If he is right, this should work for any kind of swing.
Once you get caught up in mechanical thoughts you will have problems.
Hope this helps.

It's hard to understand how someone who can hit a 5-w an average of 250 can shoot in the 100s. The only criterion you mentioned was distance. Are your shots in the fairway? Or even close? Accuracy counts as much as distance.

Thanks for the advise guys I went out today and hit a couple of bucketts to try and get back in the groove. I mainley concetrated on getting into what I heard as the "Master Postion" and keeping the angle in my trail wrist-the reason why I think I hook the ball. I did the pump drill and just beat away-it was getting better then really good then away and then back so i just need to keep working.
My shots are genarally being pushes right now, when I am hitting well I draw the ball naturally . If I am aimed right I genreally hit either the fairway or the rough. When iswing to hard I can get in to the trees.
If you have a slight push with a proper ball position (i.e. lead breast to lead shoulder with driver) then your path is good and you are only missing the proper club face position to get your draw. The way to fix this depends on the style of swing you're using but for IMA you would 'balance' the club (set it correctly in your grip) for the flight desired and if it still was not closing sufficiently look to be sure your nose was staying over your trail knee and your lead arm did not loose contact with your chest. Those two things insure that 'release' (club face rotation) will happen at the correct time. If you are working to hold the angle but are loosing the connection between lead arm & chest the club face will not close to the proper position.
