In the 90s, I used to carry a 7 wood, replacing my 3 and 4 iron. I would hit it with about a 185 yard carry with quite a bit of accuracy. When the hybrid craze hit, I dumped the 7 wood for hybrids. That was a mistake for me. Now, I am back carrying a 7 wood again and even contemplating of adding a 9 wood.
Anyone have any comments/suggestion about a 9 wood? If I hit a 7 wood (21.5 degree stiff flex) with 185 carry, how far should I expect with a 9 wood (24 degree stiff flex)?
Because of my back surgeries I have used lofted fairway woods a lot in my golfing career. I even have a full set of fairway woods all the way down to a 51 degree 21 wood. Currently I am not using my lofted fairway woods but I have used them in the past with very good results. If you can hit a fairway wood better than an iron then by all means you should.
I know from previous posts you use a modified version of LPG due to your back ailments. Well, yesterday I took a vacation day from work to go play 18. I teamed up with a nice gentlemen who just happened to play LPG. I noticed it right away due to his "split grip" hold on the club.
This fellow was not the greatest golfer. His putting/pitching/chipping was very average. But he absolutely CRUSHED the ball. Some of his drives were over 300 yards. He did mentioned that he had the recommended 2" length added to all clubs because of the spit grip. Do you do the same?
Yes I do use a form of LPG because I bend my left arm to make my back swing. I do this so that I don't have to make a shoulder turn to get the club back and up. I don't make all my clubs longer, however some of my (home-made) clubs are a bit longer than standard but I negate the longer length by gripping down on the club.
I did buy the wedgewoods from you. I don't use the wedgewoods. My swing is very shallow and I tend to sweep the ball off the turf. The wedgewoods have a keel sole and tend to dig into the ground so I could not use them. I loaned them to a friend and he never gave them back. So the wedgewoods are being put to good use, just not being used by me.
