Not even a clearkey and a solid swing conditioned by years of Bertholy can save one afflicted by Tiger Woods syndrome. In my first league match last night I found myself two down with three to play, and I figured I wasnt out of it, as I usually finish very strong one these three holes on the front. After an opening with double bogey, bogey I had settled, barely missing birdies putts on 3, 4, and 6 and converting and up and down on #5 as I came to the seventh, a 420 yard par 4 into a stiff wind. I decided to hit cut the corner to leave a nice midiron into the green. Mistake # 1. I crush the drive exactly as I intended, except for a slight push, and if only I hadnt misjudged the carry, it would have been fine leaving me 150 into the green. I should have played to the left side of the fairway as I always do but I THOUGHT I was Tiger Woods and could carry the corner. So I am behind the trees. No problem, I will just bend one around them with a five iron. This bend required me to start the ball 40 yards left of the target and then bend it back equally as far. It was like that one slice shot Tiger played in the PGA I think it was the Sergio battle. Mistake #2. LOL, I never bent one like that when I sucked. But I went ahead and set up for it, and sure enough bent it right back into the woods. I am not Tiger Woods. In a hurry, deciding that enough was enough, I grabbed my three wood (treewood this time), and hurriedly made a swipe at it trying to bend it again. Still in woods, except now so deep in a fluff of grass I can hardly see the ball. I manage to barely get it back out into the fairway, where I wedge on and two putt. NICE. Last year, I would have punched out to my favorite wedge distance, and perhaps even saved par. But I tried the Tiger shot. And now that I think about it, what I tried wasnt Tiger, he would have punched out and converted. I am not Tiger Woods. Oh yeah, my opponent? He doubled the hole, which meant I would have only been one down with a short par four and a par five left.
Yeah I have done that a lot of times. It is fun when you pull it off though. In my mind the second shot was the real killer. Did you have bail out room on the left? Which way was the wind blowing on the second shot was it helping the slice?
