N.F.L. Changes Play Rules for Concussions

N.F.L. Changes Play Rules for Concussions

NFL teams now have new, stricter instructions for when players should be allowed to return to games or practices after head injuries, guidelines that go into effect this week.

In the latest step by the league to address a hot-button issue, commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to the 32 clubs Wednesday saying a player who gets a concussion should not return to action on the same day if he shows certain signs or symptoms.

Those include an inability to remember assignments or plays, a gap in memory, persistent dizziness, and persistent headaches.

The old standard, established in 2007, said a player should not be allowed to return to the same game if he lost consciousness.

Wednesday's memo also says players ''are to be encouraged to be candid with team medical staffs and fully disclose any signs or symptoms that may be associated with a concussion.''

Nearly one-fifth of 160 NFL players surveyed by The Associated Press from Nov. 2-15 replied that they have hidden or played down the effects of a concussion.

The league said its concussion committee, team doctors, outside medical experts and the NFL Players Association developed the new standards.

NFLPA assistant executive director George Atallah said the union is ''encouraged by this new policy.'' He added that the NFLPA ''will continue to examine these issues independently to recommend the best possible policies and procedures.''

The new policy states, in part: ''Once removed for the duration of a practice or game, the player should not be considered for return-to-football activities until he is fully asymptotic, both at rest and after exertion, has a normal neurological examination, normal neuropsychological testing, and has been cleared to return by both his team physician(s) and the independent neurological consultant.''

Teams were told this month they have to find an outside neurologist who can be consulted on concussions, and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday all of those independent doctors have been approved and are in place.

Since last month's congressional hearing on NFL head injuries, momentum has been building for changes in league policy. The revised return-to-play rules come about a week after Goodell sent a memo to clubs informing them that the two co-chairmen of the league's concussions committee had resigned and that he has been looking into possible rule changes.

On Wednesday, Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis was put on injured reserve with post-concussion symptoms, ending his NFL career. Lewis had previously said he would retire at the end of the season. His teammate, starting safety Brodney Pool, also went on IR after getting at least his fourth known concussion last weekend.

They were among 11 players listed on Wednesday's league-wide injury report with concussions. Another eight were listed with head injuries.

The two starting quarterbacks from last season's Super Bowl -- Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger and Arizona's Kurt Warner -- sat out last Sunday after saying during the week they planned to play despite getting head injuries the previous week.

''The evidence demonstrates that team medical staffs have been addressing concussions in an increasingly cautious and conservative way,'' Goodell wrote in Wednesday's memo. ''This new return-to-play statement reinforces our commitment to advancing player safety. Along with improved equipment, better education, and rules changes designed to reduce impacts to the head, it will make our game safer for the men who play it, and set an important example for players at all levels of play.''

Ohio Day Care Worker Gets Six Months in Jail for Throwing Child

Ohio Day Care Worker Gets Six Months in Jail for Throwing Child

Wednesday, December 02, 2009

An Ohio day care employee caught on videotape throwing a child across a room was sentenced to 180 days in jail Tuesday, Fox 8 in Cleveland reported.

Surveillance video taken in March captured Marva Moore picking up a toddler at the Nickilodeon Child Care Center in North Randall, Ohio, and flinging him near a wall before dragging him out of the room.

Click here to watch the surveillance video at Fox 8 Cleveland.

The child, identified only as Dupree, suffered minor injuries to his face and was taken to the hospital, Fox 8 reported.

Moore was convicted in October of endangering children. Cuyahoga County Common Please Judge Hollie Gallagher sentenced her to six months in jail on Tuesday.

Moore also was slapped with a $200 fine and is banned for life from working in the child care industry.

"The strangest thing I find about the whole case is that you picked up Dupree like he was a pair of shoes at someone's house that you had to walk over and you threw them," Fox 8 quoted Judge Gallagher telling Moore. "There was nothing leading up to it."

During sentencing, Moore apologized to the toddler's mother, saying she did not intend to hurt the child.

But the mom, Melissa Mitchell, said there is no excuse.

"It's unacceptable," she told Fox 8. "A day care is supposed to protect your children. I took him in to protect him and I expected that from them and they didn't do it. He's emotionally struggling with that."

Indiana Baby Sitter Gets 125 Years for Molesting Children

Wednesday, December 02, 2009

COVINGTON, Ind. An Indiana baby sitter convicted of videotaping herself performing sex acts with children as young as 2 months old has been sentenced to 125 years in prison.

Samantha Light last month pleaded guilty to three felony counts of child molesting at a circuit court in Covington, Indiana.

During sentencing Wednesday, the 26-year-old Light apologized and said she had been coerced by her boyfriend. She said while she appeared happy on the video tape she had felt like she "was dying inside."

Light and her boyfriend, Stephen E. Quick II, have been jailed since March after a 3-year-old girl told her mother she had been touched inappropriately by her baby sitter and that the couple had taken photographs.

Peruvian wedding crashed by groom's ex
Email this Story

Dec 2, 8:21 PM (ET)

LIMA, Peru (AP) - Edwin Ortiz was just about to utter "I do," but the mother of his two children and her relatives had a different message: "Oh, no you don't." One moment, the 27-year-old Peruvian was sitting happily in a large wedding hall with 17 other couples, declaring his love for his wife-to-be to TV cameramen in the southern town of Miraflores.

The next, two women relatives of his ex-partner burst into the room, rushed up to Ortiz and began pounding on his head and back while screaming at him. The burly women eventually shoved him and his mother outside into a parking lot, where the ex-partner joined in, Miraflores spokesman Julio Hincho said Wednesday.

The ex-partner's mother, sisters and aunts all participated in Saturday's attack, Hincho said, adding, "Everyone was hauled off to jail."

Ortiz described the woman as his ex-girlfriend, but the family insists she is his wife. Police did not reveal her name and did not clarify Ortiz's marital status.

Ortiz registered himself for the mass wedding as a bachelor with no kids, Hincho said. He later acknowledged having lived with the woman but said they were separated and that he "was starting a new life."

Police officials said that a woman who identified herself as Ortiz's wife filed a complaint against him for attempted "crimes against the family."

The mass wedding ceremony went ahead as planned and all of the couples - except for Ortiz and his betrothed - were wed.

The new girlfriend, meanwhile, remained out of sight.

"She doesn't want to talk to anyone," Hincho said.

Police: Woman torched man's porch after breakup

Dec 2, 3:33 PM (ET)

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit authorities said a 29-year-old woman who was upset because her boyfriend broke up with her has been arrested after she lit his porch on fire. Fire Department investigators said neighbors saw the woman pour gas on the concrete porch and light it on fire about 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said a 40-year-old man previously told the woman she couldn't stay at his house on the city's northwest side after he discovered she had been cheating. Police responded to the home Tuesday night after the woman sprayed the man with mace.

No injuries were reported from the fire.

The Detroit Free Press said the woman was expected to be charged with arson.

Police say dresser saved woman, kids from bullet

Dec 2, 3:22 PM (ET)

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Police said a dresser positioned near a window kept a bullet from hitting a woman and her two young children as they slept at a southwestern Pennsylvania housing project. Uniontown police said Tina Schoch was sleeping with her 2-year-old and infant sons when a bullet pierced her window late Saturday at the Pershing Court complex.

Police said Schoch was awakened by a noise, but didn't realize what happened until Monday. Police said she was cleaning on Monday, saw a bullet hole and opened a dresser drawer to find the bullet.

Police have sent the bullet to a state police crime lab for testing. So far, they haven't linked the bullet to a shooter or charged anyone in connection with it.

Uniontown is about 40 miles south of Pittsburgh.

Jesus Christ dumped from jury pool for disruption

Dec 2, 3:44 PM (ET)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Court officials say a Birmingham woman who changed her name to Jesus Christ didn't live up to it when she reported for jury duty this week. The woman, previously named Dorothy Lola Killingworth, was sent to Judge Clyde Jones's courtroom for a criminal case Monday.

Court officials told The Birmingham News Tuesday that the 59-year-old was excused because she was disruptive and kept asking questions instead of answering them.

Efforts to reach Christ for comment were unsuccessful.

Court administrator Sandra Turner said people there were shocked when the woman insisted her name was Jesus Christ and some potential jurors laughed out loud when her name was called.

But Turner said unlike some Jefferson County residents, Christ didn't try to get out of jury duty and was "perfectly happy to serve."

Fort Hood suspect charged with 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder

By American-Statesman staff |

M5X168_38E8_9.JPG

The suspect in the shootings at Fort Hood on Nov. 5 was charged today with 32 specifications of attempted premeditated murder under Article 80 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Fort Hood officials said.

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is accused of fatally shooting 13 people and wounding dozens more at a building where soldiers complete their wills and are medically screened before they are deployed. Hasan was shot and wounded by responding police officers.

The victims in these specifications include 30 soldiers and two civilians, who were Fort Hood police officers, officials said.

Hasan, who remains under guard at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder in connection with the shootings.

John Galligan, Hasans civilian attorney, has said that he is considering an insanity defense, among other options, at his military trial. But Galligan has said that its too early to determine his defense strategy.

Fort Hood officials said an investigation into the shootings continues and additional charges could still be filed.

Woods says he lets family down

Woods says he lets family down

Dec 2, 11:12 AM (ET)

By DOUG FERGUSON

Google sponsored links

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) - Tiger Woods said he let his family down with transgressions he regrets "with all of my heart," and that he will deal with his personal life behind closed doors.

His statement Wednesday follows a cover story in Us Weekly magazine that reports a Los Angeles cocktail waitress claims she had a 31-month affair with the world's No. 1 golfer.

"I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves," Woods said on his Web site . "I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone."

The cocktail waitress, Jaimee Grubbs, told the magazine she met Woods at a Las Vegas nightclub the week after the 2007 Masters - two months before Woods' wife, Elin, gave birth to their first child. Grubbs claims to have proof in 300 text messages.

About three hours before Woods' statement, the magazine published what it said was a voicemail - provided by Grubbs - that Woods left her phone on Nov. 24, three days before his middle-of-the-night car crash outside his home in Florida.

Woods did not offer details of any alleged relationship.

"I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves," Woods said. "For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology."

Woods has been subjected to more media scrutiny over the last week than when he first won the Masters in 1997 and set off the first wave of Tigermania. He has spoken only three times through his Web site, although this was his longest posting.

"Although I am a well-known person and have made my career as a professional athlete, I have been dismayed to realize the full extent of what tabloid scrutiny really means," Woods said. "For the last week, my family and I have been hounded to expose intimate details of our personal lives."

And he continued to say accounts that physical violence played a role in his Friday morning car crash were "utterly false and malicious."

"Elin has always done more to support our family and shown more grace than anyone could possibly expect," he wrote.

His statement came one day after the Florida Highway Patrol closed its investigation into the accident - without Woods ever speaking to state troopers. He was charged with careless driving, which carries a $164 fine and four points on his driving record.

The story soon shifted from a patrol investigation to sordid allegations into his personal life.

In the voicemail released by the magazine, a man says to Grubbs:

"Hey, it's, uh, it's Tiger. I need you to do me a huge favor. Um, can you please, uh, take your name off your phone. My wife went through my phone. And, uh, may be calling you. If you can, please take your name off that and, um, and what do you call it just have it as a number on the voicemail, just have it as your telephone number. That's it, OK. You gotta do this for me. Huge. Quickly. All right. Bye."

The Associated Press could not confirm Woods was the caller.

California Thieves Steal $100G in Christmas Gifts for Poor

Wednesday, December 02, 2009

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. Thieves in Orange County have stolen $100,000 in toys and food donated to the poor, leaving an agency scrambling to recover just 24 days before Christmas.

Sgt. James Colgrove says crooks broke into an underground storage facility in Garden Grove over the weekend.

They took an estimated 20,000 pounds of food and about $25,000 worth of toys that were donated to the United Labor Agency of Orange County.

Colgrove says the goods were being collected for homeless families and those whose breadwinners recently lost jobs.

Items donated for a raffle also were taken.

An employee discovered the theft Monday morning.

AP FILE - In this Thursday Feb. 7, 2008 file photo, Meredith Baxter, of the 'Family Ties' television series

NEW YORK Meredith Baxter, who played mother Elyse Keaton on the 1980s TV series "Family Ties," has revealed that she is a lesbian.

"I am a lesbian, and it was a later-in-life recognition of that fact," the 62-year-old actress said in an interview Wednesday on NBC's "Today" show.

Baxter said she has been in a relationship with her girlfriend, a general contractor, for four years.

"Some people are saying, were you living a lie? And, you know, the truth is, not at all. This has only been in the past seven years," she said.

Baxter has been married three times, including to David Birney, her co-star on the '70s TV series "Bridget Loves Bernie." She is the mother of five children.

Baxter said she is "extraordinarily happy" and the support from her family and friends was immediate and unqualified.
