Parece ser que solo los dominicanos de New York vieron la Serie, nadie mas.

All-NYC World Series lowest-rated ever

The Fall Classic took a classic fall in TV ratings.
In doing so, the Subway Series between New York''s Yankees and Mets joined a growing group of marquee sports events that have attracted disappointing television audiences this year.

Fox Sports'' coverage of the Yankees'' five-game victory produced the lowest-rated World Series in history, drawing droves of viewers in the Big Apple but few other places.

The games averaged a 12.4 national rating and 21 share, down 22.5 percent from last year (on NBC) and 12 percent from 1998''s previous record low (on Fox).

``I don''t have any reaction right now,'''' baseball commissioner Bud Selig said. ``I''m going to study them over the weekend, and I''ll have a comment next week.''''

Both the rating and share are less than half of what they were the last time the Mets played in the World Series, in 1986. Each rating point represents a little more than 1 million television households; share is the percentage of in-use TVs tuned to a program.

``There''s no question the viewership never built. Normally, through a Series, it builds from a Game 1 to a Game 2, from a Game 2 to a Game 3,'''' Fox Sports president Ed Goren said Friday.

``We would have liked to have seen higher numbers. But they are still respectable in today''s world.''''

The television landscape has changed greatly in recent years, as the proliferation of cable channels siphons viewers away from the major networks and the Internet takes people away from their TV sets.

Ratings for some of the sports world''s costliest events, in terms of TV rights, have plummeted this year.

NBC''s coverage of the Sydney Games drew the lowest ratings for a Summer or Winter Olympics since 1968. The NCAA men''s college basketball title game dropped 18 percent from a year ago, which was the previous low since CBS started airing the event in 1982. The All-Star games for the NBA and baseball were the worst-rated ever.

One notable exception is the Super Bowl, which continues to consistently draw ratings above 40.

``Our research people are going to have to take a look,'''' Goren said, ``and see if they can come up with some explanations.''''

There are some likely candidates for why the World Series slumped despite five games decided by a total of seven runs:

Two teams from the same city. In New York, 61 percent of TVs that were on Thursday night tuned in to Game 5. But of the next 40 largest markets, 30 registered double-digit percentage ratings losses from 1999 for the entire Series.

Competition. With the Sydney Olympics unusually late in the year, the fall TV season was pushed back, putting some much-anticipated premieres up against baseball.

Length of games. Some industry analysts maintain that viewers aren''t willing to commit to watching 3 1/2 hours or more of baseball.

The lower-than-anticipated ratings led Fox to show ``make-goods'''' - ``free'''' commercials to make sure sponsors'' messages reach as many viewers as were paid for. Some such ads will run during coming prime time shows.

It wasn''t all bad news for Fox, which last month secured exclusive postseason baseball TV rights through 2006 as part of a $2.5 billion deal. The fourth-rated of the four major broadcast networks won prime time on three nights during the Series.

``Would Fox have preferred higher ratings? Of course,'''' said former CBS Sports president Neal Pilson, who owns a TV sports consulting firm. ``Can they do business with the ratings they have and explain away some of the negative aspects? Of course they can.''''
