CHICAGO (AP) - Sammy Sosa has until Nov. 11 to negotiate with the Chicago Cubs on a contract extension.
Cubs president and general manager Andy MacPhail set the deadline, which is the first day teams are allowed to sign newly declared free agents.
MacPhail might make bids for players such as Todd Hundley, Mike Hampton and Darren Dreifort, and wants to know how much money he''ll be able to offer them.
``I have to go in knowing my obligation to Sammy after 2001,'''' MacPhail said.
Sosa wants a a six-year deal worth about $100 million. The slugging outfielder, who led the major leagues with 50 home runs this season, is set to earn $12 million next season.
Sosa''s agent, Adam Katz, met with MacPhail this week in Chicago to discuss the contract extension, the Chicago Tribune reported.
MacPhail has said that he will not offer more money than what he views as Sosa''s market value. Sosa, who turns 32 next month, has hit 179 home runs the last three years.
