I have always been about two clicks right of Genghis Khan, but these time are confusing. When talk of easing the restrictions on wiretapping came up last week, Bob Barr of Georgia, one of the furtherest right of the Republican party, came out immediately in opposition. I think we as a nation have to rethink this left/right business. We had come to the point in our civil life where that defined everything, health care, respect for the flag, education, etc. We now face an enemy that may not be able to destroy our land, but is completely able and willing to destroy our way of life. We must rethink how we define liberty. Do national ID cards reduce your freedom? I had drinks with a very left college professor last evening, and he was outraged that such an idea could even arise. His concerns were about who would have access to the data, who would know about his private life. My response was that if you aren't doing anything wrong, why should you care. That inflammed him even more. If we don't unite against the enemy, and stop distrusting the motives of everyone else, we will have lost this war before the first shot is fired. Yes, we are going to have to give up some of the things we have taken for granted for so long, but unless we are willing to be flexible now, we may be living in a prison of our own making in the future.
