left and right even apply, anymore, and if they do, am completely confused as to where I am currently on that spectrum. I might find myself arguing with your far-right Republican, for instance, that we can't afford the degree of privacy we've previously had, and arguing with my friends in the Electronic Freedom Foundation that the Feds need the Clipper chip now and that uncrackable encryption threatens civilization, period. Whoa. Where did that come from?

I guess my bottom line is still that we only get to be the good guys as long as we still have leftist college professors to have drinks with, and that the enemies of civilization win (even if they seem to lose) if we cease, in the process of defeating them, to be civilized.

Actually I'm starting to suspect that what we are in now is a struggle between the mindsets of centuries. It's the 20th (the 21st doesn't have its own mindset, yet) versus, say, the 12th.
