Similar to most manufactured products, the yuppie generation "manufactures" what is cool but not necessarily practical. I've had experience with both combat boots (24 years in the Air Force) and Berghaus, Asolo, and Scarpa. Whatever works, works. Period. Be your own judge of fit and use. If Matterhorns work, then that's wonderful. I only wish I'd learned that lesson years ago rather than listening to the adverts and spending over a thousand bucks on boots that fit when I bought them but gave me fits 30 miles into a trek. I think Backpacker Magazine is a great proponent of the outdoors, but, like all other magazines, have to sell other people's products and keep their equipment-test journalists employed. What works for one might not work for another. God made us all with different feet, backs, and Gore-Tex needs.
Just some thoughts...
