"All the BS stops when the lights come down!"

Response to I did not catch that Shoe but I think a Bottleneck and a F-427

This refers to the Chrondex lights, of course...though I'm certainly not suggesting there's any BS'ing going on here in any of Jay's info! We owe him a huge debt of gratitude for what will be regarded as the definitive work on FE intakes when he's done.

I'm just reminded of something Jim Van Cleve, Jr. told me many years ago, not long after the Edelbrock Streetmaster was introduced. He and his Dad spent something like 14-16 hours on the Edelebrock dyno with Jim MacFarland and others, hogging/grinding/gouging/smoothing/blending, and even gluing popsicle sticks into the bottom of the plenum on a Streetmaster 390, trying to get it to outflow their 'M' intake from the SS/E car. Finally they got the numbers...only to find out it still wouldn't run as fast down the track as that OEM Ford Sidewinder intake would! I'm thinking we may see the same sort of thing at work here, despite what some of the dyno numbers may indicate.

Clearly, the low results from the F427 intake suggest that Edelbrock went way wrong somewhere with that one. That it should be minus 19 HP (while plus 5 lbs/ft!) versus a Ford PI intake (which dates from the same era) is an enigma.

It's possible that when Jay gets to the Sidewinder, it's dyno results may not look so good either. One explanation might be that it could definitely be a function of the engine RPM operating range, as this factory MR intake works well between 5,000 and 7,000...and this particular engine (as is commented on elsewhere in the discussion about the cam profile) doesn't delve deep into that range. But with today's NHRA 'Stockers' doing 9-second runs at well over 130 MPH with this intake, it's 'real world' performance is certainly proven.

I also think it's going to be very interesting when he gets the numbers from the Offy Port-O-Sonic intake, as I suspect these will top the modified Streetmaster handily.

"In theory, theory and reality are the same. In reality, they are not!"
