Response to I disconnected both the + and starter cable from the solenoid

Make sure the ground to chassis is clean, solenoid grounded well. When our old cars sit around and not driven regularly, I am sure you know strange things happen. I have similar issues frequently when trying to satrt up all the old clunker Fords around my yard. It does not make sense though that with cables on, you voltage drops to zip. Again, I am sure you know the old Ford starters usually go out over time and not suddenly. If the nose bushing were so far gone that you get nothing, You would have recognized a major short immediately. But as stated above, batteries do strange things anymore. Good luck, maybe you will not have to pull the starter. RonW
