Unless you bought a used shifter that someone cut up or really destroyed, it will work fine. Mine were all $20 swap meet pieces from 20 yrs ago. I have both versions(with and without stops).

Best thing you can do is make the linkage heim ends. The old metal Hurst clips are the downfall of powershifting. They will fail, things will get sloppy and it won't shift well since the rods won't return correctly thus jamming the shifter up. Won't be immediately, but over time the bushings will crack and fall apart. I think that is the main reason people complain about a shifter. The shifter is fine, the linkage and how well it's adjusted is the weak link.
