That stuff has been an ongoing experiment for at least 50 years if not 100. Many things have been tried to lower friction and pumping losses and the stuff that worked is considered normal in engines nowadays.
There have been some cool experiments on normal domestic V8's. Howard Johansen built and ran a custom 4.9" bore space Hemi in the early 60's with a Total Loss oiling system. The oil was pressurized and metered into the engine and just collected in the oil pan. Obviously not much good for anything but the short bursts in drag racing and maybe starting line burndowns were not an issue.
Or maybe they were and that's why oil is still pumped today.
